Don’t you like when your home smells lovely and inviting?

I suppose we all really enjoy a nice, fresh smell around our homes or work environment.

Although they are tempting, I would encourage you to stay away from those store bought “room sprays” such as Febreze or the likes.

On the other hand, I’ll show you how easy and inexpensive it is to make your own all natural, home-made, DIY Febreze with my tried and tested recipe!

IS FEBREZE TOXIC?

Unfortunately, Febreze (and other similar conventional air fresheners and/or household products) can have very detrimental effects on your health, or that of your family and pets.

According to this article:”Febreze contains chemicals that irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs. Febreze contains chemicals linked to allergies and asthma. Febreze doesn’t disclose any of these potentially harmful ingredients, so if it weren’t for studies like these by the EWG and the NRDC, we would have no idea what we were sniffing.

Alcohol denatured – Also disclosed in the ingredients of Febreze, it’s linked to cancer, developmental/reproductive toxicity, organ system toxicity and skin, eyes and lung irritator. … Geraniol – Synthetic form used linked to allergies, immunotoxicity, organ system toxicity and skin, eyes and lung irritation.”.

Why risk it?

Especially if the alternative is easy and cheap to make!

What toxic chemicals are in Febreze?

Thanks to the study conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), we know of at least 87 harmful chemicals found in Febreze ingredient list.

Following from the same article mentioned above, here are some of them, in order of toxicity to humans (I quote from the article):

BHT

Known as a neurotoxin, endocrine disruptor, immunotoxicity, non-reproductive organ system toxicity, skin eye and lung irritator.

Acetaldehyde

Known to cause cancer, toxic to reproduction and development, immunotoxin, non-reproductive organ system toxin, skin, eye and lung irritator.

Fragrance

One of the three ingredients actually disclosed, it’s a neurotoxin, immunotoxin and allergen.

Propylene Glycol

Causes cancer, allergies, toxic to immune system, accumulates in the system, non-reproductive organ system toxin, is classified with “enhanced skin absorption” and irritates the skin, eye and lung.

1,3-Dichloro-2-propanol

Carcinogenic.

Limonene

Synthetic form used is known allergen, immunotoxin and skin, eyes and lung irritator.

Methyl pyrrolidone

Toxin to reproduction and development, allergen and immunotoxin, non-reproductive organ system toxin and skin, eyes and lung irritator.

Alcohol denatured

Also disclosed in the ingredients of Febreze, it’s linked to cancer, developmental/reproductive toxicity, organ system toxicity and skin, eyes and lung irritator.

Butylphenyl methylpropion al

Allergen, immunotoxin and and skin, eyes and lung irritator.

Ethyl acetate

Linalool

Synthetic form used is known allergen, immunotoxin, and and skin, eyes and lung irritator.

Benzaldehyde

Neurotoxin, and skin, eyes and lung irritator.

Diethylene glycol monoethyl ether

Non-reproductive organ system toxicity.

Ethylhezanol

Developmental and reproductive toxin and skin, eyes and lung irritator.

Hexyl cinnamal

IMPORTANT

Always follow the advice of your trusted health practitioner before using any product around your home.

Although the natural ingredients used in the recipes below are generally safe, always consult with your doctor before using any product. Pay particular attention if you suffer from any condition, allergy or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Seek immediate advice and help from your trusted medical care provider if you are concerned about your health or that of your family members or pets.

For example

While essential oils and natural ingredients are generally safe for pets, some animals might be sensitive to some ingredients, or might develop an allergic reaction. Immediately stop any treatment if you notice any reaction, such as a skin irritation on your dog. Seek immediate help from your local vet if you are concerned about your pet’s health at any stage.

The same advice applies to you and the rest of your family.

How do you make natural Febreze?

Here is my all natural homemade DIY Febreze recipe.

I hope you will try it!

important

Always wear protective gloves when cleaning your home, car, or outdoor areas.

Do not handle any cleaning product or infested item without protecting your hands first!

Before applying or spraying any product on your furniture or upholstery, check the labels and cleaning instructions.

Do not spray or treat any expensive item, as you might possibly damage it. Leave costly items to a professional cleaner!

Always test on an inconspicuous, small area first (patch test).

You will need:

  • A little bowl;
  • One glass bottle with spray top;
  • A funnel;
  • 1 tsp of baking soda;
  • Distilled water (or filtered water);
  • 20 drops of your favorite essential oil (or blend).

To make:

In a little bowl, mix the bicarbonate of soda and the drops of essential oil of choice.

With the help of a fork, make sure to mix the two ingredients well.

In order to avoid spillage, use a funnel to pour the mix in the glass bottle.

Top up with water.

Give it a good shake to mix.

How to use this natural room spray

Shake well before each use.

Mist into a room for an instant fresh air!

This homemade air freshener spray works well to freshen up rooms, old shoes, your car, etc.

Storage instructions

After use, store the rest of the bottle in a dark cupboard, away from direct heat and sunlight.

Discard any left over product after 2 weeks max.

For a longer shelf life, substitute the water with alcoholic witch hazel. The alcohol acts as a preservative.

Pro tips

You could slightly warm up the water before pouring it in the bottle. In fact, warm water will help in dissolving the baking soda faster.

Bear in mind that hot water will ruin the essential oils, so make sure to check the temperature before pouring it in the bottle!

Do i need to use a glass bottle to make room spray?

Yes, you do.

Essential oils are very powerful. Over time, they could eat through a plastic spray bottle, so you should avoid them if at all possible.

If you can, opt for a blue or amber glass spray bottle instead.

Always choose a dark colour glass, to shade the oils from direct sun light.

Lastly, if you need to use a plastic bottle, make sure to check it is safe to use with essential oils.
