Making your own wood furniture polish is so easy and inexpensive that you will love my recipe!

Store bought products are not only very pricey, but they are loaded with toxic ingredients and can release dangerous fumes in your home.

Moreover, they often leave a nasty opaque residue on your furniture, living it greasy and unpleasant to the touch.

What can I use instead of furniture polish? How do I make homemade furniture polish?

At this point you are probably thinking:”ok, I get it. No buying Pledge at the local store. But, what can I use instead of Pledge?”

This is where I come in! I’m going to show you how easy it is to make a home remedy for furniture polish that works on any wooden surface.

All you need is two ingredients: olive oil and white vinegar!

Read on for the instructions.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING HOMEMADE FURNITURE POLISH?

There are several benefits to using a home remedy for furniture polish, instead of a commercially produced one.

ALL NATURAL INGREDIENTS

First and foremost, a home remedy for furniture polish guarantees complete control over the ingredients used. You will know exactly what is inside of it, without the worry of checking the labels!

A homemade wood polish is completely natural and toxin free.

ALLERGY FRIENDLY

As a result of you knowing what ingredients to use in the recipe, there cannot be any allergy worry.

My recipe only uses oil and vinegar.

NO FUMES IN YOUR HOME

This DIY recipe for wood polish is completely free from synthetic fragrances, known to cause hormonal disruptions.

People that are affected by asthma or similar issues, might find relief in their symptoms when they switch to a natural recipe.

If you suffer from any allergy or asthma or skin condition, you might find that switching to all natural cleaning products might indeed bring great relief to your symptoms.

If you are unsure about making natural cleaners, I have several posts to show you how easy it is to switch to an all natural homemaking!

For example:

INEXPENSIVE

The two ingredients you will use in the recipe are inexpensive, and you most likely already have them at home. This bring us to the next point.

ALWAYS AVAILABLE WHEN YOU NEED IT

Because you most likely already stock oil and vinegar in your pantry, you can whip up this recipe at any time. Your homemade wood furniture cleaner and polish will be ready in under 2 minutes, when you need it. This, in turn, will save you a trip to the local store!

SAFE FOR ALL FAMILY

This home remedy for furniture polish is completely safe for all the family and for your pets as well.

It is 100% toxin free and allergy friendly.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

It seems almost superfluous to say that if you use only natural ingredients in your DIY cleaning products, the result is very environmentally friendly.

Indeed, by making your own, you will not:

  • Buy plastic containers;
  • Generate waste, as you will only make the amount needed;
  • Create pollution in the air and in the ocean;
  • Etc.

NO STICKY RESIDUE

Unlike store bought products, this homemade recipe is silicon free.

Silicon is responsible for making your furniture look dull and sticky over time.

In fact, this ingredient is used in many commercially produced wood polish items. Every time you apply them, the “new” layer of silicon bonds with the “old” one, therefore giving a sticky and opaque look to your furniture.

If you have sticky wooden furniture in your home and you are looking for a natural way to clean it, you can check this post!

IMPORTANT

Always follow the advice of your trusted health practitioner before using any product around your home.

Although the natural ingredients used in the recipes below are generally safe, always consult with your doctor before using any product. Pay particular attention if you suffer from any condition, allergy or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Seek immediate advice and help from your trusted medical care provider if you are concerned about your health or that of your family members or pets.

For Example

While essential oils and natural ingredients are generally safe for pets, some animals might be sensitive to some ingredients, or might develop an allergic reaction. Immediately stop any treatment if you notice any reaction, such as a skin irritation on your dog. Seek immediate help from your local vet if you are concerned about your pet’s health at any stage.

The same advice applies to you and the rest of your family.

What home remedy can I use to polish wood furniture?

There are many homemade furniture polish recipes available on line. However, they are not created all equal!

The following recipe I’m going to share with you is the one as published on the Doterra website. You will know that you can fully trust it then! You don’t need to take my word for it!

This home remedy for furniture polish will:

  • Clean your furniture gently, without damaging it;
  • Bring back the shine of your wood items;
  • Nourish your precious wood furniture;
  • Provide a barrier from accumulation of dust.

Sounds amazing, right?

So let’s get to the actual recipe for my natural homemade polish!

home remedy for furniture polish easy recipe

As mentioned above, for this quick and cheap recipe you will only need two ingredients: olive oil and white vinegar.

The addition of essential oils is totally optional but highly recommended.

Those natural oils add an extra cleaning power to the mix, and also a lovely scent. For example, you could add lemon oil, or orange, or any citrus fruit oil. Arborvitae is also excellent.

In particular, lemon essential oil is perfect for this diy furniture polish as it increases its strength and shine, while being perfectly safe even around your pets.

important

Only use 100% unadulterated and pure essential oils, from a reputable company.

Never use essential oils topically unless properly diluted, and only use them after a patch test.

Pay particular attention if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or on older people and young children.

Some people might develop skin irritations or adverse reactions.

Never ingest essential oils without reading the label first, as not all oils can be consumed internally.

Always talk to your trusted medical practitioner and/or certified aromatherapist before using essential oils, especially if you suffer from any allergy, intolerance, are ill or are already taking any medication.

you will need

  • ¼ cup of olive oil;
  • ¼ cup of vinegar;
  • 10 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional);

instructions

In a spray bottle, add olive oil and vinegar. Add the essential oils if using.

Shake to mix the ingredients well.

To use, simply apply a small amount of the mixture onto a microfibre or cotton cloth and wipe wood surfaces clean. Repeat every two to three months or as often as needed.

storage

This recipe doesn’t contain any water. Therefore, any amount left in the bottle can be safely stored in a cupboard for up to a year.

Bear in mind that you will need to store it in a dark environment, away from direct sunlight and heat.

Moreover, don’t forget that olive oil (like any other food oil such as coconut oil, avocado oil, sunflower oil) can go rancid. As a result, it is best to check the mixture before each use. If there’s an odd smell coming from it, just discard it and make a new batch.

Lastly, you can use a plastic spray bottle to store this mix. However, if using essential oils, make sure to use a plastic that is safe and suitable. If in doubt, use a dark glass bottle instead.

PRO TIPS FOR POLISHING FURNITURE

This home remedy for wood furniture polish is absolutely amazing.

However, for best results, please do follow these simple steps.

Firstly, before applying it on your furniture, make sure to clean it. Use a clean cloth and remove all dust or debris.

Also, make sure to always use a soft fabric. Stick to a lint-free cloth.

Does furniture need to be polished?

Polishing your wood furniture is not a must. What I mean by that, is that you don’t necessarily have to do it. However, like with every other device or item in your home, if you look after them, they will last a very long time, and will maintain their original  look.

Regularly polishing your wooden furniture will keep it shiny, nourished, and in great condition for many many years.

How Often Should I Polish my Furniture?

There is no definitive answer to this question, really. That can depend on a number of factors, such as the type of wood, how much use it gets daily, and of course on how much time you want to spend looking after your furniture!

As a rule of thumb, you should polish your wooden surfaces at the very minimum every six months. For more delicate furniture, and for best results, apply this homemade wood polish three to four times a year.

Is olive oil good for polishing wood?

Olive oil is an excellent all natural ingredient to use  in your homemade wood polish.

It nourishes wood, and brings out its natural shine.

Furthermore, it can protect wood furniture from mild dents and scratches.

For this home remedy for furniture polish, you don’t need to buy an expensive brand of a good olive oil. Just use a cheap one and it will work just fine.

What kind of oil can I use to polish wood instead of olive oil?

I leave this question to the experts. According to this article, you can use several types of oils, such as:

  • Tung oil,
  • Walnut oil,
  • Teak oil,
  • Linseed oil,
  • Etc.

I personally have only ever used olive oil, as it is most readily available and inexpensive.

Before using any oil, always check if they are safe and non toxic for your family as well as your pets! A food-safe oil is a must if your pets like to leak your furniture!

Can you use mineral oil as a furniture polish? Is mineral oil good for polishing wood?

A type of oil is absolutely essential to make your homemade furniture polish.

I recommend of course you use olive oil for the recipe.

However, if you are planning on making a larger batch, you should opt for another type of food grade mineral oil.

Indeed, olive oil (or any food derived oil) can go rancid over time.

Instead, you could use food grade fractionated coconut oil.

If you want to use your homemade natural wood polish on items such as wooden chopping boards or spoons (that is to say, items that get in contact with food), I’d recommend you use this recipe instead.

Can vinegar damage wood?

There is very conflicting advice on the internet regarding this. I’ll leave it up to you to decide if you want to use vinegar on your furniture or not.

Personally, I’ve used it for years now, and never had a problem.

However, in this particular recipe the amount of vinegar used is really minimal. Moreover, it is mixed with olive oil, and not used straight.

Only use distilled white vinegar, and stay away from other types.

Does vinegar polish wood?

Strictly speaking, vinegar does not polish wood.

However, white vinegar is a natural disinfectant. It can remove dirt and small stains from your furniture.

Can I Use Apple Cider Vinegar to polish wood?

I have never used apple cider vinegar for this recipe. Therefore I cannot recommend it.

Also, bear in mind that apple cider vinegar can potentially attract pests, due to its pectin content.

I’d stick to the original recipe from the Doterra website, and only use plain, white, distilled vinegar.

CAN I USE ESSENTIAL OILS IN HOMEMADE WOOD POLISH?

You can certainly add essential oils to your home remedy for furniture polish.

Not only they will increase its cleaning power, but they also add a lovely all natural scent around your home.

If you have pets, make sure to use oils that are friendly for them.

Always talk to your trusted medical practitioner and/or certified aromatherapist before using essential oils, especially if you suffer from any allergy, intolerance, are ill or are already taking any medication.

why does wood furniture get sticky?

According to this article, “When mature woodwork gets sticky, it’s a sign that the finish has gotten dirty, coated with oils or wax, or that it’s breaking down. A surface that’s sticky or gummy is often the result of dirt and grime accumulation—especially when it’s frequently touched, like a handrail. Other possibilities include waxy buildup from furniture polishes that contain waxes or oils. (Definitely nix the use of furniture polish). “.

Unfortunately, commercial furniture polish sprays can lead to buildups over time.

Switching to a natural wood polish can help in preventing this problem in the future, but it cannot completely get rid of an old build up.
