BEESWAX CLEANS AND PROTECTS

If you are wondering “is beeswax good for furniture polish?”, the answer is definitively yes!

Beeswax will nourish your furniture and will protect it from further damage, caused by direct sunlight, dust, and water.

BEESWAX LEAVES A SHINY AND RICH FINISH

If your furniture is looking rather dull, beeswax will instantly give it a wonderful shine.

Homemade beeswax polish is clear in colour. Therefore, it will not alter the aspect of your furniture.

BEESWAX IS VERY EASY TO USE

Once you have melted the beeswax and made the homemade polish, it retains a soft texture that it is very easy to use.

Your wooden furniture will be like new with very little effort.

BEESWAX IS CHEAPER THAN STORE BOUGHT PRODUCTS

Indeed, beeswax pellets are relatively cheap to buy, and one bag will last a long time.

BEESWAX IS SUITABLE FOR ALL TYPES OF WOOD

Unlike store bought products, you won’t need to purchase different items, depending on the type of wood you want to treat.

In fact, beeswax is suitable for all types of wood.

How do you make beeswax furniture polish? What do you mix with beeswax to make a polish?

Before I share with you this homemade beeswax furniture polish easy recipe, let’s have a look at the main ingredients you will need.

beeswax pellets

Beeswax pellets are readily available in many online stores or at your local health shop.

Choose a reputable brand, and opt for organic if at all possible.

For this recipe, you can use both white and yellow pellets.

mineral oil

In order for your homemade beeswax furniture polish to retain its creaminess and soft consistency, you will need to mix the melted pellets with a mineral oil.

You can, of course, use olive oil for the recipe. However, if you are planning on making a larger batch, you should opt for another type of food grade mineral oil.

Indeed, olive oil (or any food derived oil) can go rancid over time.

If you want to use your homemade natural beeswax polish on items such as wooden chopping boards or spoons (that is to say, items that get in contact with food), better stay away from it.

For example, you could use food grade fractionated coconut oil.

essential oils

The essential oils in this DIY furniture polish are completely optional, but totally recommended!

Those natural oils add an extra cleaning power to the mix, and also a lovely scent. For example, you could add lemon essential oil, or orange, or any citrus fruit oil.

important

Only use 100% unadulterated and pure essential oils, from a reputable company.

Never use essential oils topically unless properly diluted, and only use them after a patch test.

Pay particular attention if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or on older people and young children.

Some people might develop skin irritations or adverse reactions.

Never ingest essential oils without reading the label first, as not all oils can be consumed internally.

Always talk to your trusted medical practitioner and/or certified aromatherapist before using essential oils, especially if you suffer from any allergy, intolerance, are ill or are already taking any medication.

if you are curious about using essential oils in your home, I have a few posts you could check!

IMPORTANT

Always follow the advice of your trusted health practitioner before using any product around your home.

Although the natural ingredients used in the recipes below are generally safe, always consult with your doctor before using any product. Pay particular attention if you suffer from any condition, allergy or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Seek immediate advice and help from your trusted medical care provider if you are concerned about your health or that of your family members or pets.

For Example

While essential oils and natural ingredients are generally safe for pets, some animals might be sensitive to some ingredients, or might develop an allergic reaction. Immediately stop any treatment if you notice any reaction, such as a skin irritation on your dog. Seek immediate help from your local vet if you are concerned about your pet’s health at any stage.

The same advice applies to you and the rest of your family.

Homemade beeswax furniture polish easy recipe: FAQs

Here are some of the most common questions about this homemade beeswax furniture polish.

Please, feel free to contact me if you need any help, as I’d love to assist you!

Are there different grades of beeswax? What to look for when buying beeswax?

According to this article, “There are three main grades or types of beeswax: cosmetic (a.k.a. pharmaceutical), industrial, and organic. Cosmetic- and organic-grade beeswax pellets are the most common types on the market. Cosmetic-grade beeswax pellets are the best choice for food or making lip balms, lotions, and other beauty products since they generally have the fewest impurities. Industrial-grade is best for items like furniture polishes and candles. Organic-grade beeswax pellets are the best all-purpose option.”.

Should I use white or yellow beeswax?

As mentioned above, for this specific recipe, it doesn’t really matter which type you use.

They both will provide excellent nourishment and shine to your furniture.

Which brand beeswax is best?

There are several brands on the market. Make sure to buy from a reputable company and use 100% pure and unadulterated beeswax.

Amazon sells many different brands, but I particularly like this one.

Does pure beeswax expire? Does beeswax turn rancid? Can bacteria grow in beeswax?

The website ehow.com confirms that indeed pure beeswax has a very long shelf life: ”This amazing product has a nearly infinite lifespan. Beeswax has even been found still useable in the tombs of ancient pharaohs. Crafters don’t have to worry about pure beeswax going bad in storage. Beeswax contains propolis, which is a natural, powerful preservative. However, it is possible for homemade products with other ingredients to go bad.”.

How long does beeswax last? Should beeswax be refrigerated?

You do not need to refrigerate pure beeswax. Make sure to store it in a closed container or sealed bag, in a dark and cool cupboard, away from direct heat and sunlight.

Does beeswax change the colour of wood?

No, beeswax will not alter the colour of your wood furniture. All it does, is to nourish it and bring out its shine again.

Is beeswax good for all wood furniture? Can I use beeswax on varnished wood?

Yes, homemade beeswax wood polish, unlike commercial products, is suitable for all types of wood.

Does beeswax restore wood furniture? Does beeswax remove scratches on wood?

Rubbing beeswax polish can easily get rid of small scratches on your furniture.

However, for large damaged areas, you could follow the advice provided in this article.

How often should I use beeswax on wood?

You might be wondering how often should you use beeswax on furniture. Well, that depends on the type of wood, and on how much time you want to spend looking after your furniture!

As a rule of thumb, you should polish your wooden surfaces at the very minimum every six months. For more delicate furniture, and for best results, apply this homemade beeswax polish three to four times a year.

What oil do you mix with beeswax?

You will need a mineral oil to make this recipe in order to retain the soft consistency of the wood polish.

If you skip this ingredient, once the beeswax cools down, it will become harder again, making the recipe almost impossible to use.

It is best to use a food grade mineral oil for this recipe, as they have a longer shelf life. For example, fractionated coconut oil is a very good option.

However, if you are not planning on storing the mix for very long periods of time (say, less than a year), you could also use olive oil. Just check that the mix hasn’t gone rancid before using it!

What is the ratio of oil to beeswax?

For my recipe, I use one part beeswax pellets to three parts oil.

How long do you leave beeswax on furniture? How long do you leave beeswax to dry?

When applying this natural beeswax furniture polish, leave the mix on your furniture for up to 5 minutes.

After that, grab a clean, dry soft cloth and start drying the wood completely.

How many coats of beeswax on furniture?
