What Is a Sugar Body Scrub Used For?

Body scrubs are very popular products, readily available in your health or beauty store.

They are used to:

  • exfoliate the skin;
  • get rid of dead cells;
  • remove dirt and excess oils;
  • promote a natural glow and clear complexion.

On the market, you can find scrubs specifically meant for your face, or others for your body. Sometimes, a combination of the two is also available.

How can I make body scrub at home?

Making your very own body scrub is super easy. You really only need a few ingredients, a mixing bowl and a spoon.

No special tool, ingredient or skill is required.

Seriously, it is that easy!

How do you make the best body scrub?

In my modest opinion, whenever possible, the homemade version of any product (whether for the house or for personal care) is always preferable to the store bought one.

Making your own products:

  • gives you great piece of mind in terms of the ingredients used;
  • it’s generally cheaper;
  • you can modify a recipe to suit your needs and preferences.

HOMEMADE IS ALWAYS A WINNER!

Is homemade sugar scrub good for your body?

This fall DIY body scrub for glowing skin uses natural ingredients that are well known for their beauty and health benefits.

For example, honey is known for its antibacterial and soothing properties.

On the other hand, essential oils are used to support your health, as well as for their beauty benefits.

I’ll go through the list of ingredients later in the post.

What are good ingredients in sugar scrub?

Since we are using natural ingredients, it is always best to get 100% natural, pure and organic, whenever possible.

Always stay away from synthetically produced ingredients, and adulterated ones.

This especially applies to essential oils.

When buying essential oils:

  • Do your research first, and buy only from a reputable company;
  • Stay clear from oils who’s purity is not certified;
  • Buy organic and ethically sourced.

important

Only use 100% unadulterated and pure essential oils, from a reputable company.

Never use essential oils topically unless properly diluted, and only use them after a patch test.

Pay particular attention if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or on older people and young children.

Some people might develop skin irritations or adverse reactions.

Never ingest essential oils without reading the label first, as not all oils can be consumed internally.

Always talk to your trusted medical practitioner and/or certified aromatherapist before using essential oils, especially if you suffer from any allergy, intolerance, are ill or are already taking any medication.

What is better a sugar or salt scrub?

There is no definitive answer to this question.

Both salt and sugar offer health benefits, but they work in a different way.

A sugar scrub is certainly more gentle on your skin, whereas a salt one is more “aggresive”. However, a salt scrub will provide detoxifying benefits.

In other words, what you choose is ultimately your choice, and it depends on your preference.

Does sugar scrub dry out skin? Does sugar make your skin dry?

Not only sugar does not dry out your skin, but it actually helps moisturising it.

According to healthshots.com: “Sugar helps retain moisture of the skin as it prevents it from drying. It helps in hydrating your skin by drawing moisture from the natural environment to your skin cells. Sugar is a good source of glycolic acid, which breaks the bonds between the outer layer of skin cells (dead skin cells included), creating a peeling effect that can make the skin appear smoother and even.”

Does sugar scrub clog pores?

Sugar does not clog your pores. On the contrary, by eliminating dead cells, it promotes a clear and smooth skin.

How do you make a sugar body scrub?

As already mentioned, making this recipe for a DIY body scrub for glowing skin is very easy.

Let me guide you through the main ingredients used in it before I share with you the full recipe.

the ingredients you will use are:

  • Sugar;
  • Carrier oil;
  • Honey;
  • Essential oils (optional but recommended);
  • Pumpkin spice mix.

What is the best sugar to use for body scrub?

The recipe I’m sharing today calls for brown sugar.

I really like the way it looks and feels on my skin. Moreover, the natural brown colour blends so well with the pumpkin spice mix, and gives the body scrub that gorgeous fall vibe!

However, feel free to use what you have on hand: white sugar, cane sugar, turbinado sugar, etc. all work well.

When choosing the right type of sugar for you, you might want to consider the following:

  • Brown sugar is gentle on the skin and not too abrasive, making it ideal for sensitive skin. If using brown sugar, you might be able to use this fall DIY body scrub twice a week.
  • Pure cane sugar is good for all skin types and is not aggressive.
  • Granulated sugar (or white sugar) is also a good option, but of course it lacks the brown colour that makes the recipe ideal for fall.

WHAT IS THE BEST CARRIER OIL FOR BODY SCRUB?

What are the best essential oils for sugar scrubs?

This recipe for a fall DIY body scrub works very well even without adding essential oils.

However, the addition of those natural oils will enhance its benefits further, so I highly recommend using oils!

You can choose to add any oil you prefer really, but if you are going for that fall vibe, I suggest you use any of the following ones:

  • Cinnamon bark;
  • Clove;
  • Wild orange;
  • Ginger;
  • Cardamom.

If using essential oils, always follow safety guidelines.

can I use honey in my body scrub?

Honey is an important ingredient in my recipe for a DIY sugar body scrub.

Indeed, its health properties are widely known.

For example, honey has:

  • Antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that can help in fighting acne;
  • Soothing benefits, ideal to sooth an irritated skin (eczema);
  • Moisturising properties for dry skin;
  • Scar reducing benefits. In fact, by nourishing the skin, honey can promote tissue regeneration and help reduce scars and stretch marks.

Make sure to always use raw, organic and local honey, sourced from a reputable and safe source.

can I use homemade Pumpkin spice mix for a body scrub?

Around here we are all about homemade everything, whenever possible.

Naturally, this recipe for a DIY body scrub calls for a homemade pumpkin pie spice mix too.

Making your own is super easy, and only requires grinding and mixing a few spices.

Now, onto the recipe! I hope you enjoy it.

you will need:

  • Glass jar with a tight lid to store the scrub (mason jars are perfect);
  • A small bowl for mixing;
  • Spoon;
  • A cup of brown sugar (200g);
  • 1 Tsp Pumpkin spice mix;
  • 1 TBSP of honey;
  • One cup (in volume, not weight) of your favourite carrier oil;
  • 10 drops of Essential oils in total (optional);
  • 1/2 tsp of vitamin E oil (optional).

TO MAKE:

In a small saucepan, slowly warm up the carrier oil and honey, until the honey has dissolved. Remove from the heat and let it cool down for a few minutes.

Next, add the essential oils and Vitamin E oil if using. Mix well.

In a separate mixing bowl, add the sugar and the homemade pumpkin spice mix, and stir them till well combined.

Add the wet ingredients to the sugar mix and stir well to mix all ingredients.

Gently spoon the body scrub in a clean, dry glass jar and close the lid tightly.

Don’t forget to label the jar correctly, so that you don’t forget what’s in it!

Make sure to add a “use by date” to the label.

Store your homemade exfoliating scrub in a dry, dark place, away from direct heat and light.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT CONSISTENCY OF A HOMEMADE SUGAR BODY SCRUB?

This fall DIY body scrub should have a sandy consistency.

If the mix turns out too “soupy”, you risk the sugar completely melting quickly.

Simply add a bit more sugar till you have reached the right consistency.

CAN YOU SWAP THE INGREDIENTS USED IN THIS FALL DIY SUGAR BODY SCRUB?

Yes, you certainly can. That’s indeed the beauty of homemade products: you have full control over what goes in them!

If you don’t have

  • Brown sugar, use another type;
  • Pumpkin spice mix, simply use ground cinnamon in its place;
  • Honey (or for a vegan version of this recipe), maple syrup is good too.

CAN YOU MAKE THIS RECIPE IN LARGE BATCHES?

Absolutely yes!

If you want to use this DIY pumpkin spice body scrub as a wonderful DIY holiday gift, feel free to double or triple up the amounts of ingredients, and make a large batch to present to your friends and family this fall season.

Homemade fall body scrubs make great gifts indeed!

Do I Need to Add a Preservative to this recipe?

No, you don’t need to add any preservative to this recipe for a DIY body scrub.

Firstly, sugar is a natural preservative in itself.

Secondly, the recipe does not contain any water, so it will not spoil quickly if you store it correctly.

Do you scrub before or after bathing?

Taking a bath before using this DIY scrub is recommended but not strictly necessary.

The reason why it is advised is because the warm water will help in opening your pores, and therefore will help the scrub penetrate your skin better and faster.

Moreover, taking a bath will also soften the outer layers of your skin, and consequently will maximise the exfoliating powers of the scrub.

For best results, immerse yourself in warm water for at least 20 minutes before using this body scrub.

Do not use soap while bathing, BEFORE a body scrub. See below!

Do you use soap after body scrub? Should I wash after scrub?

You should definitively not use soap before a body scrub, but only afterwards.

Here’s why:

According to this article:

“soap tends to clean out dead skin cells, debris, dirt, and oils, which means they (soaps) don’t really have much to do after a body scrub. In fact, they (soaps) act as a base to prepare the body for a body scrub”.

What should I do after body scrub?

After a body scrub, you should rinse your skin well and follow up with your favourite body moisturiser for best results.

When rinsing your skin, make sure to get rid of all residues of the scrub.

I always use my body scrub in the shower, just before I wash. This way, I make sure to get rid of the body scrub thoroughly, and I also reduce cleaning up time!

Do you use sugar scrub on wet or dry skin?

Slightly wetting your skin before using a body scrub is always advisable and best, as it is less harsh on the skin.

However, remember to always scrub your body gently, to avoid skin irritation.

How many minutes should I scrub my body?

Scrub your skin gently, in a circular motion, for no longer than 30 seconds. That’s all it takes to get a glowing skin with this homemade fall sugar body scrub.

Rinse thoroughly after use.

IMPORTANT

Don’t use the scrub more than once or twice a week.

Do not use on irritated and inflamed skin.

Avoid contact with open skin.

How often should you use a sugar scrub?

Do not use this DIY sugar body scrub more than once or twice a week, as it might irritate your skin.

Do you shave before or after sugar scrub?

If you also have time to shave when you are planning to use this fabulous body scrub, you should absolutely shave AFTER scrubbing.

Indeed, exfoliating first will help in getting rid of dead cells that can potentially clog your razor. Scrubbing first will give the best results in terms of shaving!

How long does homemade sugar scrub last?

This homemade sugar scrub will last for at least 6 months if stored properly.

When you are preparing it, make sure to wash your hands well, and only use clean and dry tools, as residual water can potentially contaminate the scrub.

Store in a clean glass jar with a tight lid. Keep away from heat and direct sunlight.
