DOES PUMPKIN SEED OIL WORK FOR HAIR LOSS?

Unfortunately hair loss is a common ailment among both men and women.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an androgen that is considered responsible for many cases of hair loss.

From healthline.com:

”Sex hormones in the body are believed to be the most significant underlying factor behind male pattern hair loss.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an androgen. An androgen is a sex hormone that contributes to the development of what are thought of as “male” sex characteristics, such as body hair. But it can also make you lose your hair faster and earlier.

There are treatments meant to slow the onset of male pattern baldness by specifically targeting DHT.”

The phytosterol present in pumpkin oil can block this androgen action, and therefore may decrease hair loss.

Does pumpkin oil help hair growth?

I did some research on line, and found many articles dedicated to the use of pumpkin seed oil to grow hair. Unfortunately they all explain that more research is needed before anyone can confirm that pumpkin seed oil alone is 100% effective. Moreover, there seems to be no certain amount of time needed to see results.

However, pumpkin oil can certainly support you when it comes to hair growth and health.

Pumpkin seed oil is rich in vitamin B7, also known as biotin. This vitamin helps to increase keratin levels in your hair, making it stronger.

The essential fatty acids present in the oil (such as oleic acid and linoleic acid) can increase blood flow to the hair follicles and promote healthy hair growth.

topically

Topical application of pumpkin seed oil can be done in several different ways.

Pumpkin seed oil SCALP massage

A hot oil treatment using pumpkin oil can be very good for your hair. In fact, massaging your hair with pumpkin oil can increase blood flow to the scalp, stimulate hair follicles, and therefore promote hair growth.

The quantity of oil needed will depend on the length of your hair, so I suggest you start with a couple of tablespoons, and add more if needed.

For an effective treatment, follow these directions:
  • Pour enough oil in a small bowl, and warm it up slightly in the microwave or on the stove (only use microwave safe tools if using this oven);
  • After checking the temperature (to make sure the oil isn’t too hot), slowly start by massaging your scalp first, and then cover your hair.
  • Cover your head with a warm towel (just place the towel on a rad while your are massaging your scalp), and let it rest for at least 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Wash and style your hair as per normal.
  • Repeat this massage once a week for as long as needed to see results.

PUMPKIN OIL HAIR MASK

For a variation of the above massage, you could make a hair mask.

For this recipe, you could boost the power of pumpkin oil by adding other ingredients, known for they benefits for hair health.

Castor oil, coconut oil, olive oil, honey and essential oils all work very well to increase hair growth and hair shine.

TO MAKE A HAIR MASK

In a small bowl or jar, mix 1 Tbsp each of:

  • Pumpkin oil;
  • Castor oil (or jojoba oil, or olive oil);
  • Coconut oil;
  • Honey.

Slowly (and safely!) warm up the bowl over the stove, in a double boiler.

If using the microwave instead, warm up the mix in 30 seconds blocks, stir after that, and place back in the oven for another 30 seconds.

Continue warming up and stirring the mix until all oils have liquified.

Remove the bowl from the heat, and let it cool slightly, while stirring continuously.

Add 2 drops of rosemary essential oil  or peppermint oil (optional), and mix well.

When the mix has cooled down enough for you to use it safely, apply it on your scalp and hair, and gently massage it.

Cover your hair with a towel, and let it sit for at least half an hour. If you can, leave it overnight.

Wash and style your hair as per normal.

Repeat once a week for as long as needed.

NOTE

If you have very long hair, you might want to increase the amount of ingredients needed to make up the mask. Use 2 Tbsp of each oil instead of one.
