How to make Pumpkin Jam with homemade pumpkin spice

Here’s the recipe for my delicious jam made with homemade pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice mix. I hope you enjoy it!

A NOTE ON THE INGREDIENTS

This recipe calls for homemade pumpkin puree and homemade pumpkin spice mix.

Of course you can totally swap them with store bought ones.

No pressure my friend!

For the recipe, you will need:

  • 1 lemon peel (thin, with no pith);
  • 1 orange peel (thin, with no pith);
  • The juice of both fruits;
  • 15g of fresh ginger (peeled and sliced thinly);
  • 100g of sugar (brown, white or jam sugar will all work);
  • 1 Tbsp of your pre made pumpkin spice mix;
  • 450g of homemade pumpkin puree (roughly 2 cups or 15 ounces).

HOW TO PREPARE A HOMEMADE PUMPKIN SPICE MIX

If you have never made a pumpkin spice mix, it is very easy indeed.

All you need is a food processor or spice grinder, and a few spices, such as a cinnamon stick (or ground cinnamon), fresh nutmegs, ginger, etc.

Tools needed:

  • Food processor (to grind some of the ingredients);
  • Jam jars (stick to glass jars and avoid plastic if possible);
  • Immersion hand blender (optional);
  • Wooden spoon;
  • Large saucepan.

Instructions:

Place lemon and orange peel, ginger, sugar and pumpkin spice mix in a food processor, and grind until the ingredients are finely ground.

In a large saucepan, add the ground ingredients, lemon juice, orange juice, and the pumpkin puree.

With the help of a wooden spoon, mix all the ingredients well.

Start cooking the jam over medium heat.

Make sure to keep an eye on the cooking jam and stir as needed, to prevent the contents from sticking to the sides of the pot and burn. Bring the pot down to low heat if needed.

Cook for about 30 minutes, or until the jam has reduced down to half the volume.

For a smoother jam, you could use your immersion blender (just like you would do when making soup). However, this step is optional, and it depends on your taste.

IMPORTANT: how to store homemade pumpkin jam?

When it’s ready, pour the jam in your sterilised mason jar.

Seal the jar with a lid and let it cool down to room temperature.

When canning food for long term storage, always follow safety guidelines!

You could use this article from the FDA, or this one from the National Center for Home food Preservation.

Don’t risk it!

BEST PUMPKIN JAM RECIPE WITH HOMEMADE PUMPKIN SPICE: FAQS

Here are some of the most common questions about this recipe.

If you can’t find the answer to your question here, please feel free to reach out. I’ll be more than happy to help.

Does pumpkin have pectin?

Indeed, pumpkins have about 1% of pectins.

Pectins are binding agents crucial for making any type of jam.

In my recipe, you will not need to add extra pectin, as the amounts contained in both the pumpkin and the lemon and orange are more than enough for the jam.

Should jam be sealed hot or cold?

All types of preserves should be added to sterilised jars and sealed straight away.

To seal the jars properly, fill them right to the top and close them tightly. Let them cool down at room temperature.

How long does pumpkin jam last in the fridge?

Once you open any type of preserve, you can store it in the fridge for only a few weeks.

Some sources say you can store opened jars in the fridge for up to a month, but I personally only keep them for 2 weeks max. I’d rather be safe than sorry.

Can homemade jam be left unrefrigerated?

If you follow safety guidelines for canning, you can store all your sealed jars at room temperature for a very long time, provided you keep them away from direct sunlight and heat. However, once you open a jar, you should keep it in the fridge.

The same advice applies to store bought preserves as well. Do not leave unsealed jars on the kitchen counter. Always store food in the fridge!

Can you freeze homemade jam?

Yes, I do it all the time!

If you, like me, do not have the skills or the patience, or the tools, to can your preserves properly, you can safely store your homemade preserves in the freezer.

Freezing food and drinks is indeed a great way to avoid food waste if canning is not an option for you.

Once the jam is ready, pour it in clean and dry jars, close the lid tightly and wait till it has cooled down to room temperature before placing in the freezer.

The heat from the jam will seal the lid and therefore it is safe to keep them for up to 6 months in the freezer.

Bear in mind, if you are planning to store your jam in the freezer, to not overfill the jars, as liquids tend to expand when frozen.

How do you keep jam from molding?

Molding is unfortunately a natural process that happens to food over time, if it is not store properly, and consumed relatively quickly.

Thankfully, there are steps you can take to prevent your preserves from molding.

Firstly, make sure to close the jar lid tightly as soon as you pour jam in it. The heat will seal it completely.

Secondly, once you open the jar, make sure to replace the lid properly and store the jam in the fridge.

Most importantly, every time you consume the jam, make sure there are no traces of it on the inside of the lid, as they can start to grow bacteria very fast, and consequently contaminate the rest of the jar.

How long does homemade jam last without canning?

If you choose not to can properly your homemade pumpkin jam, you need to store it carefully or it will spoil very fast and make yourself and your family very sick. This is very important!

You have 2 options:

  • If you are planning to make large batches of homemade jam, you need to store the jars in the freezer;
  • If you don’t have freezer space available, simply make very small batches of jam (maybe a jar or two), keep them in the fridge and consume within 2 weeks.

HOW MUCH SUGAR IN HOMEMADE PUMPKIN JAM?

Homemade jams generally need sugar in order to taste nice and preserve well over time.

In this simple pumpkin jam recipe I use brown sugar, but you can use white, caster or jam sugar if you prefer.

In my home we don’t particularly like food that is too sweet, so for this recipe I’m using a small amount of sugar (100g only). However, feel free to add more if you prefer. It is just a matter of taste!
