Any wellness TV show or magazine, and any natural health oriented message you get from social media and the internet will tell you the very same thing: our bodies are full of toxins!

Yes, we practically are a walking toxin!

We are exposed to toxic substances from the moment we are conceived and growing in the uterus.

Anywhere we go, we are exposed to man made chemicals, where it’s in there air we breathe, the cleaning products we use at home, the food we eat, the water we drink, or the personal care items we get at the local store.

That is why it is so important to detox our bodies every now and then.

In this post, I’ll show you exactly what are the best essential oils for detox, and how to use them.

IMPORTANT

The content of this blog post is intended for information purposes only. It is not intended to replace professional medical advice.

I am not a doctor and I’m only sharing my personal experience here.

If you are unwell or sick, always ask your trusted doctor or medical practitioner for advice. Pay particular attention if you are allergic or intolerant to any food and/or medication, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Children and elderly people should also seek medical attention quickly if unwell or experiencing any symptom.

Even if you don’t experience any symptom, always contact your trusted health provider if in doubt. If you feel unwell and are worried, it is safer to ask for medical advice from a professional than to wait.

Never risk it!

WHAT IS TOXIC OVERLOAD?

Before we dive deep into using essential oils to detox your body, it makes sense to establish exactly what we mean by “toxic overload in the body”.

According to this article, “Toxic overload is the condition of having an excessive amount of toxins in one’s body. These harmful substances come from water, food, cleaning products, and other environmental sources that many people are being exposed to regularly. Toxins are also produced in one’s body due to poor gut health through the process of autointoxication.”

What causes your body to become toxic?

Our modern lifestyle unfortunately means we are exposed to an incredible amount of toxins every day.

On any day, your body may get in contact with toxins such as:

  • Benzene from car fumes;
  • BPAs from packaging;
  • Parabens, phthalates and sodium lauryl sulphate (SLSs) from body care products (like shampoo, body wash, moisturisers, etc);
  • Aluminium (for example contained in deodorants);
  • Hormones contained in dairy products and meat;
  • Pesticides on fresh produce;
  • Poly-fluorinated chemicals (PFCs) in non-stick cookware;
  • Flame retardant chemicals found in some clothing, furniture, electronics, etc.
  • Etc.

As you can see, it is very hard (if not practically impossible) to escape toxin overload!

If you are a healthy and fit individual, your body will naturally be able to process and get rid of toxins. Unfortunately, in some cases, your body might stop processing toxins in an efficient way. That is when your body’s ability to expel toxins is reduced, and you get a toxin overload.

However, there are ways you can start a body detox in a natural way.

In this post, I’ll try to cover as much as possible what are the best ways to detox naturally!

What are common toxins in the body?

Among the hundreds of toxins we are exposed to on a regular basis, there are a few that are more common than others.

For example:

BISPHENOL – A (BPA) AND BISPHENOL – S (BPS)

This toxins are commonly used in the manufacturing of plastic bottles and food containers, as well as in toys and food cans.

Bisphenols are endocrine disruptors: “BPA is a known endocrine disruptor. Although initially considered to be a weak environmental estrogen, more recent studies have demonstrated that BPA may be similar in potency to estradiol in stimulating some cellular responses. Moreover, emerging evidence suggests that BPA may influence multiple endocrine-related pathways.”

BPAs and BPSs are harmful to people cause they can easily leach into food and drinks contained in the plastic packaging. That is why, when buying plastic bottles, you should look for BPA free ones. Moreover, whenever possible, buy glass jars instead of food contained in cans.

EMFs (Electromagnetic field)

This type of toxic exposure is sadly very common in this day and age, due to the proliferation of mobile devices, Bluetooth and WI-FI technologies, etc.

Although there are some devices that claim to reduce EMF exposure, none of them is 100% effective.

CHLORINE

Chlorine is mainly used in water treatment facilities to disinfect water and, therefore, to make it safe to drink.

The levels of chlorine used in water treatment are rigorously monitored by the  competent authorities.

However, exposure to high volume of chlorine can have an impact on your health.

FLUORIDE

Fluoride can be found naturally in soil, water and foods. Man made and synthetically produced fluoride is contained in toothpaste, mouthwashes, some type of water (fluoridated water), and many varieties of non-organic fresh produce (fluoride is indeed present in pesticides).

Excessive exposure to fluoride has been linked to a number of health issues, such as dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, thyroid problems, neurological problems, and other health problems.

MERCURY

Found naturally in fish such as swordfish and tuna, mercury is also present in dental fillings.

Exposure to even small amounts of mercury may have serious health effects (on your nervous, digestive, urinary, respiratory systems and more). Indeed the World Health Organisation (WHO) considers it as one of the top ten chemicals of major public health concern.

PHTHALATES

Phthalates are one of the worst endocrine disruptors known to man. Unfortunately for us, they are present in many personal care products such as shampoo, toothpaste and make up.

They have been linked to serious health risks for the reproductive system, as well as for the general development of young children and teenagers.

PESTICIDES

“Pesticide” is a very wide term, that can include all products sprayed on crops, as well as weed killers, pet flea products and gardening products.

Although pesticides are so widely used, there are a few steps you can take to limit your exposure.

For example:

THE SHOPPER’S GUIDE TO PESTICIDE IN PRODUCE™

This is a very handy guide to print out and bring with you whenever you are shopping.

Indeed, if buying 100% organic fruit and veg is not an option for you, this guide will help you choose what fresh fruit and veg have the most (or the least) pesticide residues.

This way, you could lower your pesticide exposure by avoiding the so called “dirty dozen”.

I highly recommend you check this guide and print it out, so you can carry it with you on your next trip to the local grocery store.

You can find the guide here.

A very good source of information on the most common toxins found in food is this article from www.healthline.com.

What diseases are caused by toxins?

Exposure to toxic chemicals may lead to a wide range of health issues, ranging from mild to serious to fatal.

Naturally, not all people exposed to toxins will get sick. The extent of your symptoms and health consequences (if any at all) will vary, depending on many factors, such as your age, your fitness, your family history, previous illnesses or conditions, your lifestyle, etc.

To name just a few, toxins can bring on:

  • Aplastic anemia;
  • Asbestosis;
  • Asthma;
  • Cancer;
  • Leukaemia;
  • Parkinson’s disease;
  • etc.

What are 4 ways toxins can enter the body? What is the quickest and most direct way for toxins to enter the body?

There are 4 main ways that toxins can enter your body.

Here they are, as described in this article from the university at Buffalo: “As you use or come into contact with chemicals, be aware that they can enter your body through four major routes.

  • Inhalation – gases and airborne particulate can be breathed in through your nose or mouth.
  • Absorption – chemicals, including dust, smoke or vapors, can enter your body through your skin or eyes.
  • Ingestion – chemicals can enter your body through your mouth.
  • Injection – chemicals can enter your body through an accidental impact, cut or puncture to your skin.”.

Which part of the body is most exposed to toxins? What organ is most affected by toxins?

The liver and kidneys are the organs that are responsible for metabolising and excreting toxins. Therefore they are the organs more at risk of toxin induced damage.

How long do toxic chemicals stay in the body?

That depends largely on the type of toxins. Some chemicals can leave the body quickly after exposure. On the other hand, other toxins such as the pesticide DDT, can stay in your body for many, many years.

The amount and level of toxins present in your body at any given time, is what is called your “chemical body burden”.

What are the signs and symptoms of toxicity?

If you are in a toxic overload, you may experience several symptoms, ranging from mild to serious. The extent of those symptoms will very much depend on the type of toxins and chemicals that are causing them.

Your can experience:

  • General feeling of being unwell;
  • Frequent episodes of digestive issues (such as diarrhoea, loss of appetite, stomach pain, bloating, bad breath, etc.);
  • Drowsiness;
  • High temperature;
  • Headaches;
  • Breathing difficulties (or any symptom related to your respiratory system);
  • Skin rashes;
  • Blurred vision;
  • Mental confusion;
  • Seizures;
  • Loss of consciousness;
  • Coma.

It is very important to seek immediate medical advice if you are in any way concerned about your health or that of a family member or friend.

How are toxins removed from the body?

The human body is a miraculous thing! It is built to help us to get rid of toxins.

Generally speaking, the organs that rid us of toxins are the liver, skin, kidneys, intestines, lymph nodes, and blood vessels.

Indeed, elimination of toxins happens through breathing, urine, faeces, and through sweat (saunas anyone?).

How can I detox my body at home? How do I detox my liver and kidneys naturally?

Although it is practically impossible to avoid chemicals altogether, there are certainly a few things you can do to limit toxic exposure.

Let’s have a look!

BUY ORGANIC WHENEVER POSSIBLE

Try to consume organic produce as much as possible.

Check the “dirty dozen” list I shared above for further info.

avoid fish that might have large quantities of mercury

Try to limit consumption of fish such as tuna or swordfish. Stick to other types of fish instead.

AVOID PLASTIC CONTAINERS TO STORE OR REHEAT YOUR FOOD OR DRINKS.

As mentioned before, BPAs carry health risks for us, so it is best to avoid plastic altogether when it comes to food and drink. Use stainless steel or glass bottles and containers instead.

If you need to use plastic, make sure to stay away from BPAs.

CONSUME REAL FOOD

Avoid processed food as much as possible. Eat whole foods, made with real ingredients instead. Stay away from artificial dyes and ingredients.

LIMIT CAFFEINE AND ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

Limited and occasional use is fine of course. Just don’t overdo.

STOP SMOKING

I know this is a very hard one. But help is available, so don’t hesitate to ask for it. Contact your trusted doctor or any of the support groups available in your area. They will be more than happy to help.

DRINK PLENTY OF FRESH, CLEAN WATER

It goes without saying: drinking plenty of clean, fresh water is essential to your health.

As I mentioned already, our kidneys help us to flush out toxins through the urine, so the more you drink, the lower the toxins level in your body will be.

Herbal teas are very beneficial too, and they are readily available in any grocery or health food store.

CONSIDER SWITCHING TO NATURAL PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS

In many cases, products such as shampoos and shower gels, or make up and deodorants are the main culprit when it comes to the toxins that enter our body.

Those products are literally loaded with man made chemicals linked to so many health issues.

Consider switching to products that are made with natural ingredients, or make your own if you can. It is very easy.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IDEAS, WHY NOT CHECK THE FOLLOWING POST?

CLEANING PRODUCTS

Another major culprit in your home. And probably the first one that comes to mind.

It is almost superfluous to say that cleaning products are extremely bad for your health. Imagine all the fumes that you inhale daily, as you clean your home, or the liquids your hands touch!

Please, do consider natural alternatives, and making your own DIY cleaning products.

It really is very easy, and I have plenty of info to help you with that.

How long does it take to flush your body of toxins? How many days does it take to detox your body?

Once you start detoxing, remember that it is a process, and it will take anything from a few days to a few weeks. Be patient.

The first step you need to take is to limit and minimise exposure to toxins, whether is foods or products.

Try to tackle one issue at the time, as to avoid overwhelm.

For example, start by slowly replacing your personal care products, one at the time, as you use them up. This will give you time to do your research, and will not feel like a burden, psychologically and financially.

Baby steps are the way to go when it comes to detoxing your body!

How do you tell if toxins are leaving your body? How can you tell if your body is detoxing?

As your body starts the detoxification process, you will experience a series of symptoms. This is perfectly normal, and it is a sign that you are doing something right.

According to this article, common detox symptoms are:

  • Headaches
  • Lethargy
  • Temporary muscle aches
  • Mucus or other discharge
  • A coated, pasty tongue
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Weakness
  • Cravings
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Rashes
  • Low energy levels
  • Frequent urination

“While you are in the detoxing process, you may suffer old symptoms that you had before. There are times that you might think of becoming ill but it is important to continue with the detox and do not take any medications to help with the withdrawal symptoms. The aim of detoxing is to flush the chemicals out of the body, not introduce more!”.

What essential oil is best for detox?

There are indeed some essential oils that can help you and support you during this detox process.

The healing power of essential oils is a precious tool to have at your disposal when your body needs a little extra support. Essential oil blends can help boost your mood, increase energy level, support your immune system, relieve fatigue and brain fog, etc.

Just remember that a few drops of essential oil alone will not perform miracles. You will need to put the work in yourself if you want to see the best results. That is to say, you will need to make changes to your lifestyle and follow a healthy diet for example.

important

Only use 100% unadulterated and pure essential oils, from a reputable company.

Never use essential oils topically unless properly diluted, and only use them after a patch test.

Pay particular attention if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or on older people and young children.

Some people might develop skin irritations or adverse reactions.

Never ingest essential oils without reading the label first, as not all oils can be consumed internally.

Always talk to your trusted medical practitioner and/or certified aromatherapist before using essential oils, especially if you suffer from any allergy, intolerance, are ill or are already taking any medication.

How do I detox with essential oils?

The usual three ways to use essential oils apply when it comes to detox as well.

Let’s break them down.

how to use essential oils internally

Definitively a controversial way to use essential oils.

Many sources claim you should not ever ingest essentials oils.

I personally do, and have done for many years now. That is not to say you should too. You should certainly do your own research before considering using oils internally, and always consult with your doctor or certified aromatherapist.

Most importantly, bear in mind that not all oils can be ingested, so always check labels first!

You can put a drop of essential oil in a fresh drink, mix it with food, or ingest through a veggie cap.

how to use essential oils topically

If you’d rather stick to external use, then topical use is a very common one. This application method is suitable for both children and adults.

Topical use means application of an oil on your skin, generally thanks to a roller bottle and a massage oil (carrier oil).

A simple way to use oil topically, is to apply them on the bottom of your feet.

how to use essential oils aromatically

Aromatic use of essential oils is their use through your sense of smell.

This is probably among the simplest ways to use and experience the benefits of essential oils.

You can place a few drops of essential oils in your diffuser, or smell an oil straight from the bottle.

Some people (mi included) like also to place a drop or two in essential oil jewellery or on the ends of their hair, in order to benefit of the aromatic benefits of oils throughout the day.
