As I write, we are at the end of April and spring is truly well underway here in Ireland.

I find spring a most wonderful season of the year, with flowers blooming everywhere, new life being born in farms around the country, and of course with the sun shining on us and warming up our faces, after the long bone-chilling winter months.

As much as I love spring though, I appreciate that for many people around the world, this is a difficult time of the year, due to one big inconvenience: seasonal allergies and hay fever (allergic rhinitis) in particular.

In my family we are extremely lucky cause nobody suffers from any form of allergies. Unfortunately, this might still change in the future, and that’s why I’m so grateful I have Essential Oils in my home to help us in case we needed them.

ESSENTIAL OILS FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS

If you want to learn more about “Essential Oils for Health and Wellness” , go check simplycandice.com”: she has a fantastic post that will show you some of the best Essential Oils to take care of your health.

ARE ESSENTIAL OILS GOOD FOR ALLERGIES?

Allergic reactions are nothing more than a response from our body to certain “triggers” (such as pollen, dust, foods, etc.). Those triggers are called “allergens”, and they cause an immune reaction and inflammation that we then define as an “allergy”.

Essential Oils can provide amazing support to boost our immune system and fight inflammation. They can help to detoxify the body and to get rid of infections and harmful toxins.

By supporting our overall immune system and health, they can help to reduce the body’s sensitivity and therefore over reaction to outside triggers.

WHAT ARE ALLERGIES?

From Dr. Axe’s website:

“An allergic reaction begins in the immune system. An allergen is a substance that tricks the immune system — making it think that the allergen is an invader. The immune system then overreacts to the allergen, which is really a harmless substance and produces Immunoglobulin E antibodies. These antibodies travel to cells that release histamine and other chemicals, causing the allergic reaction”.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ALLERGIES

From the same website: “These allergens will trigger symptoms in the nose, throat, lungs, ears, sinuses and lining of the stomach or on the skin”.

HOW COMMON ARE ALLERGIES?

Sadly, over the last half century, the number of individuals suffering from allergies has increased significantly.

This Irish website reports that about 25% of European people suffer from some type of allergy, and that percentage is set to rise to 50% within the next decade. And those numbers include also young children!

Between 40 and 60 millions of Americans are also affected by allergies.

WHY ARE ALLERGIES SO PREVALENT?

This is a difficult question to answer, especially if we consider that the very same allergens that trigger allergies nowadays were present even thousands of years ago, but without the same consequences.

One possible explanation can be traced to inflammation, which is, as we know, the root cause for many diseases.

A sedentary life style, paired with a diet rich in processed food and with a high exposure to toxins in our environment, has caused our body to develop poor gut health and inflammation. Our bodies are already stressed as a result of having to deal with those problems. Therefore, when we are exposed to a trigger, our system overreacts.

In other words, if our immune system was not already overworked, there would be no abnormal reaction to an allergen.

CAN ALLERGIES BE DANGEROUS?

Some people will only experience milder symptoms like a runny nose or watery eyes. Although unpleasant, those manifestations can easily escalate to more serious ones. You can experience itchy noses, a sore throat, sinus headaches and sinus infections, itchy eyes, respiratory issues, as well as an impaired sense of smell, shortness of breath and death.

HOW TO AVOID ALLERGIES TRIGGERS

If you suffer from any allergy, I’m sure you have been told to avoid triggers as much as possible.

However, that can be nearly impossible when the allergy season comes around and the pollen count is high! Also, if you have a food intolerance, hidden ingredients used in the food industry can lead to issues.

HOW TO AVOID HAY FEVER TRIGGERS

There are some things you can do anyway, to try and avoid hay fever allergens.

  • Always check pollen count before venturing outside, and stay indoors if it’s too high;
  • Keep your windows and doors closed if possible (depending on temperature);
  • Replace air filters in your home frequently;
  • Try to keep your home as dust free as possible (hoover and dust daily if you can);
  • Keep in mind that laundry that is hung to dry outdoors will collect pollen, so keep it inside instead;
  • Be mindful if your pets come inside your home after having spent time outside;
  • Wash your bedsheets and pillows frequently.

ESSENTIAL OILS FOR ALLERGIES RELIEF

Thankfully for us, there are many ways to treat allergies.

There are so many over the counter medications on the market nowadays. But there is also a natural way. We know that some Essential Oils have antihistamine properties, meaning that they can inhibit the effects of histamines on our body.

WHAT ARE HISTAMINES?

Histamines are chemicals released naturally in our body in order to start the process to fight an allergen. When antihistamines are introduced, the allergic reaction is stopped cause they inhibit the histamines response.

WHAT ESSENTIAL OILS ARE BEST FOR ALLERGIES?

There are many Essential Oils that are considered very effective when it comes to provide relief from allergies. They can safely be used as a natural allergy relief.

Most importantly, they are completely natural and free from any type of added chemical, they are inexpensive, safe for every age, and will not have undesired side effects.

HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SEASONAL ALLERGIES

You can use Essential Oils to relieve allergies in many different ways.

Let’s have a look at some of the most common ones.

If you want more in-depth education on how to use Essential oils, make sure to check this post:

AROMATICALLY

USING A DIFFUSER: diffusing Essential Oils is very easy and cost-effective. It is as easy as putting a few drops of Essential Oil (to create a diffuser blend) and water into your device and let it run. When you use a diffuser in your environment, everybody will benefit from the properties of the Oils used, and you can just go on about your day, without even realizing you are breathing in the incredible powers of the Oils.

MAKING A PERSONAL INHALER: you can purchase empty and unused inhalers from health stores or online and just fill them with a few drops of your preferred Oils, and use them throughout the day as needed.

INHALING STRAIGHT FROM THE BOTTLE: if you prefer, you can simply inhale Essential Oils straight from a bottle.

INHALING FROM CUPPED HANDS: for immediate relief, place one drop of your Oil of choice on your palm, and inhale from cupped hands.

MAKING A PILLOW OR ROOM SPRAY: making a spray with your Essential Oils is very easy: just fill a bottle with water or witch hazel and spray as needed to freshen up a room, clear the air, or promote restful sleep when sprayed on your pillow at night.

TOPICALLY

Making a roller blend specifically tailored to suit your needs is, in my opinion, the best solution for when you are out and about.

Just grab a 10ml roller bottle, add your chosen Essential Oils and top up with a carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil. Apply as needed on temples, back of neck, chest, under the nose and under the feet, AM and PM.

To aid when allergies are triggered by the clothes you wear, you could also add a few drops of Essential Oils to your laundry detergent. Alternatively, or in addition to that, you could also make up your own fabric conditioner by using plain distilled white vinegar and adding a couple of drops of Oils to it. Just use it in place of regular conditioner.

INTERNALLY

Internal use of Essential Oils is very effective and fast, but I know it’s not the preferred method of many people.

However, if you like me use Essential Oils internally, remember that a little goes a long way. Don’t add more than a couple of drops to a veggie cap daily. You can always increase in time.

For a super effective recipe, you can add a drop each of Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint to an empty veggie cap, and take it internally once a day, with water. You can do so for a week or two and see if you find it beneficial.
