Do essential oils actually do anything?

Yes, they do. If you use them correctly and safely, and if you choose a trusted brand like Doterra.

Essential Oils do work, and there are centuries of experience to prove that.

Millions of people use Essential Oils daily and with excellent results. I’m one of them. I’ve seen first hand how they have helped my family (you can check my BIO to see how and why I got started with Doterra).

How long does aromatherapy take to work?

Our body is an amazing machine. When we inhale a pure Essential Oil, its tiny molecules travel through our nose and reach our olfactory nerve.

The olfactory nerve is located just under the bridge of our nose, and it is an extremely powerful tool that can quickly send messages directly to our brain.

Our sense of smell is indeed the most powerful sense, and it is thanks to smells that we make memories. I bet you didn’t know that!

THE POWER OF OUR SENSE OF SMELL

Think of whenever you pass a stranger on the streets and suddenly realise that that person is wearing your mother’s favourite perfume: are you not immediately brought back to your childhood?

Imagine also the kitchen smells when you are cooking your favourite meal. Every time I make a cake in my home, I always remember when I was little cause my mum is an excellent baker and I have fond memories of her busy in the kitchen.

How long does it take for essential oils to be absorbed?

Because Doterra Essential Oils are 100% pure and natural, they are therefore very powerful.

Did you know that it only takes:

  • 22 seconds for the Essential Oils molecules to reach our brain,
  • 2 minutes for the Oils to be found in our bloodstream,
  • 20 minutes for them to have affected every single cell of our body.

Isn’t it just amazing?

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS? THE 3 different ways to use essential oils.

In this paragraph, I’m going to show you the three different ways of using Essential Oils in your home.

Aromatically

Using Essential Oils aromatically means you are inhaling them. You can do so by diffusing them, inhaling straight from the bottle, or simply by placing a drop on your hands, cup them together, and breath in the lovely scent.

There are also other ways to use Essential Oils aromatically, and I’m going to show you how.

What happens if you inhale essential oils?

As mentioned above, when you inhale Essential Oils, their molecules travel through your nose to the olfactory nerve, which sends a message to your brain.

In about 20 seconds, your brain has received the message and will in turn send messages to the rest of your body, so that you can benefit from the properties of the Oil.

How to use Essential Oils to scent a room? How to use Essential Oils in a diffuser?

Using a diffuser is very straightforward. Fill the diffuser with water first (never exceed the recommended amount) and add a few drops of your Essential Oil of choice.

Diffusers are readily available and are also inexpensive.

WHY DIFFUSING ESSENTIAL OILS?

Diffusing is probably the most common way to use Essential Oils aromatically because it is so easy, and everyone in the room will benefit from the properties of the Oils.

Particular care should be taken when diffusing around children, pets or older people, as they might be affected in different ways. In those cases, it is best practice to leave the door of the room open, so pets can leave if they wish, and people will not feel overpowered by the scent.

How many drops of ESSENTIAL OILS can you put in a diffuser?

There are many factors that contribute to determine how many drops of Essential Oils you can put in a diffuser.

  • First of all, it depends on the capacity of the device: the larger it is, the more water you can use to fill it, and therefore the more drops of Oils you can add.
  • Also, it depends on your preferences, as you might prefer a stronger scent.
  • Room size also plays an important room.
  • There is really no limit to the amount of drops you can add to your diffuser, but I always recommend to start with no more than 4 drops. You can add later if you need more.

How to use essential oils in the shower?

This is a fun and time efficient way to use Essential Oils aromatically, but it is not very common.

There are 2 main ways to use Oils in the shower.

PLACE THE OILS ON THE SHOWER TRAY

When showering, just place a couple of drops of Essential Oils of your choice on the shower tray, away from the direct stream of water, and shower as per normal. The steam generated by the hot water will make  the scent of the oils travel up to your nose fast, and you will breath in the aromatic power of the Oils!

Can you inhale essential oils from the bottle?

Yes you can. In fact this is something I do quite often, especially when I need little “pick me up” in the morning, or if I’m out and about and can’t use my diffuser or apply the Oils topically.

You could also put a drop of an Essential Oil on your hands, rub them together, cup them, and inhale.

AROMATHERAPY DIFFUSER JEWELLERY

Enjoy the aromatic power of Essential Oils all day long by wearing them on your body!

There are several specialised stores that sell necklaces or bracelets for this purpose. You can also get them from Etsy or Amazon. They are generally very affordable.

What is aromatherapy diffuser jewellery?

This is a particular type of jewellery (usually necklaces or bracelets), made from a variety of materials including clay, metals, and glass.

The Essential Oils are placed or held within the piece, which allows you to inhale the diffused scent when you wear it, and benefit from it.

how do you use ESSENTIAL OILS for jewellery?

Always refer to the instructions that come with the piece you buy.

Just place a few drops of the Oil of your choice on the bracelet or necklace, and wear them as you would any other piece.

USING ESSENTIAL OILS ON YOUR HAIR: Is it ok to leave ESSENTIAL OILS On YOUR hair?

I love applying Essential Oils on my hair, and I do it frequently.

It is perfectly safe to do so, and actually certain Oils, like Rosemary and Lavender, have amazing properties when it comes to haircare.

You can apply a few drops of those Oils directly on your scalp and massage it to stimulate hair growth.

Another way I like to use Oils on my hair, is by placing a couple of drops on my hands, rub them together, and then apply the Oils on the ends of my hair. This way I can smell the Oils all day long!

CAN YOU diffuse all essential oils?

Find the answer in this blog post:

Topically

Using Essential Oils topically refers to applying them on your skin.

This is a very targeted way of using the Oils, as you will apply them exactly where you need support. For example, if you have any type of digestive discomfort, you can apply Essential Oils on your stomach.

Also, using Essential Oils topically is very cost effective, as a few drops will go a long way when you properly dilute using a carrier oil. By diluting, you can cover larger areas of your body using a very tiny amount of Essential Oils.

Can you use essential oils on skin?

Using Essential Oils on your skin is certainly a safe and efficient way to use them, as long as you follow the appropriate safety guidelines.

For example, some Oils can be used neat, while others MUST be diluted before application.

Also, remember that some Oils are photosensitive, so you should not expose your skin to direct sunlight after use, for at least 12 hours.

Please do refer to my SAFETY INFO before using Essential Oils topically.

HOW DO YOU DILUTE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR THE SKIN?

When using Essential Oils topically ALWAYS refer to a safe dilution chart by age!

You can print out my FREE DILUTION CHART.

ESSENTIAL OILS DILUTION CHART

YOU CAN GET MY FREE PRINTABLE with a safe dilution chart for essential oils here:

FREE DILUTION CHART FOR BEGINNERS ESSENTIAL OILS USERS.

Where do you apply essential oils?

You can apply the Oils where you need support. For example, rub some drops on your back to alleviate pain. Or apply them on your chest if you are experiencing some issue with breathing. You could also apply 1 drop of Breathe/Air on the bridge of your nose to relieve a stuffy and congested feeling.

How to use essential oils topically?

In my opinion, the safest, and also the most practical and mess free way to use Essential Oils topically, is to make up a roller bottle.

Roller bottles are very handy to have around the house, cause they are ready for you when you need them in a pinch.

Many a times one of my children has woken up to a high temperature, and all I needed to do was to grab a pre made roller bottle, apply on their spine and let the Oils work their magic.

HAVE ROLLER BOTTLES READY IN YOUR HOME

You can make up a few roller bottles at the same time, making sure to dilute the Oils according to different ages in your home, and labelling them correctly.  This way, every time you need a bottle, you know exactly what to reach for, without having to worry about looking for the right Oil or a Carrier oil.

Roller bottles are very practical when you are out and about as they can used discretely, without people noticing.

Also, your children can carry a few in their school bags and use them if needed.

How to make essential oils roll on?

Making up a roller bottle is very simple. Just grab an empty bottle, put the Essential Oils drops FIRST, and then top up with the Carrier oil of your choice. Close it tightly and shake well to mix. Store the bottle in a safe place, away from direct sun light, when not in use.

Remember to use only glass bottles, and preferably not clear glass, as to protect the Oils from sun exposure.

How to topically apply essential oils?

As previously mentioned, whenever you need support, apply the Oils on your skin, and massage to help with absorption.

Depending on the type of Oil or blend you are using, you can apply them neat or after diluting them.

Always refer to a safe dilution chart.

How do essential oils work topically?

When you apply an Oil topically, you are targeting a specific area of your body. Therefore, this is a highly efficient way to use Essential Oils.

If you dilute an Oil with a Carrier oil, for example when you make up a roller bottle, you are not diluting its power. On the contrary, you are “stretching” the Essential Oil’s benefits in order to cover a large area of your body with only a few drops. This is why using an Oil topically is a very cost effecting method!

If you are planning on making any DIY product using Essential Oils, make sure you know what containers are safe for use. Read my post here to learn how to choose safely.

Internally

Doterra offers products of the highest quality to the market.

Its Oils are CPTG certified, which means they are Certified, Pure and of Tested Grade.

This certification gives us consumers peace of mind when it comes to internal use. In fact, Doterra’s Essential Oils can be ingested safely.

Is it Ok and safe to use ESSENTIAL OILS internally?

Yes, it is!

Once again, though, I’d like to stress the fact that you should only do what you feel comfortable with. In order to benefit from the power of Essential Oils you don’t have to ingest them. You can use them aromatically or topically.

Also, as mentioned at the very beginning of the post, my recommendations only apply to the use of Doterra Essential Oils. I do not trust, support, endorse or recommend any other brand.

Which essential oils can you ingest and can be taken internally?

You cannot ingest all Essential Oils. Some of them are suitable for internal use, and some are not.

As a general rule of thumb, Oils that come from fruits and berries (Lemon, Orange..), herbs (Rosemary, Thyme) or roots (Ginger, Turmeric) can be ingested. Oils that come from trees (Siberian Fir, Wintergreen) CANNOT BE INGESTED.

To safely understand what Essential Oils are safe for internal use, I have written a post for you:

Which essential oils can be taken internally?

How to use ESSENTIAL OILS internally?

There are several ways to use Essential Oils internally.

Firstly, you could just put a drop under your tongue. This method, for example, works very well to fight a persistent headache: use a drop of Frankincense under your tongue, every half hour or so until the pain subsides.

Secondly, you could add a drop to water or any drink (smoothies or juice for example).

Thirdly, you can cook with Essential Oils (make flavoured cooking oils, or use a drop in your baking ….).

Lastly, put a few drops in a veggie cap and swallow with some water.

WHAT IS THE Best way to take Essential oils  internally?

Using a veggie cap is the best way to use Oils internally in my opinion.

Some Essential Oils are considered “hot Oils” (Oregano and Cassia for example), as they are extremely powerful. The internal use of these Oils is ONLY possible by using a veggie cap, so that the Oils don’t actually come into contact with the inside of your mouth or your throat and oesophagus.

Using a veggie cap is the safest way, especially if you are in doubt.

How fast do Essential Oils work? In this post, I’ll tell you how quickly do Essential Oils work, and how to use them topically, aromatically and internally.

CONCLUSION

Doterra only uses 100% pure and natural Essential Oils, so they are very potent and efficient, and 1 drop will go a long way.

This is the only company that provides CPTG Essential Oils, meaning that not only they are Certified and Pure, but they are also the most tested.

That’s why Doterra is the most trusted Essential Oils Company.

  1. Hi Dee,

Interesting post, thank you. However, under ‘how to make your own roller bottle ‘ you say to get an empty bottle and fill it with the oil and carrier oil. It’s not a roller bottle if it doesn’t have a roller ball in the top. Is it possible to actually make your own rollerball bottle? For instance could you refill one that you’ve previously bought that had stuff in it. I’d be interested to know your thoughts on this as a roller bottle is extremely useful for carrying around,

    Cheers Sue-Lee x

    1. Hi Sue and thank you for your message. You can certainly reuse empty bottles to make your new blends. You can use an old, empty essential oil bottle and just place a roller top on it (they can be easily sourced online). Alternatively, you can reuse an empty roller bottle. Always make sure to wash thoroughly whatever bottle you want to reuse, and let them dry completely before filling them with your blend of choice and carrier oil. I’m a big fun of recycling! Roller bottles are indeed very handy to have in your bag or pocket, wherever you go. Let me know if I can help in any way please. Dee.
