STEAM INHALATION

The very first recipe I recommend combines the power of steam with the health benefits of essential oils.

This recipe will provide immediate and lasting relief from sinus congestion and from common cold symptoms.

The oils used in this home remedy are indeed very powerful and will clear all sorts of upper respiratory infections.

Instructions:

Simply boil some water in a kettle or in a pot.

With the help of oven gloves, slowly pour a cup and a half of the hot water in a heat proof bowl or dish.

To the hot water, add 1 drop each of:

  • Eucalyptus essential oil;
  • Oregano essential oil;
  • Peppermint essential oil;
  • Melaleuca essential oil;
  • Lemon essential oil;
  • Doterra Breathe/Air essential oils blend.

How to perform the steam inhalation:

Now, while keeping your eyes closed, position your face directly onto the steam. Grab a towel, and cover your head with it, so that the steam is trapped under the fabric.

Just relax, breath in and out, and let the essential oils do their job!

Make sure to do this for at least 10 minutes.

After you are finished, discard the water and oils.

PRO TIP

Alternatively, if you don’t want to waste, let the water cool down completely, and use it in your diffuser.

IMPORTANT

It is very important that you keep your eyes closed at all times when you do this steam inhalation. The essential oils used are very powerful and will make your eyes teary if you open them. Trust me!

ESSENTIAL OILS STEAM INHALATION FOR KIDS

The recipe and method I shared above is only to be used by adults, because the essential oils are very powerful.

If your children experience a runny nose, you can still use the same recipe but simply place the bowl in the room with them at night.

The steam will work as they fall asleep, and you can simply go and remove the bowl once the water is cold.

Naturally, make sure to position the how water bowl away from kids’ reach.

Hot water can cause severe burns, so always make sure to keep it out of reach of young children!

ESSENTIAL OILS NOSE MASSAGE

If your nose is really congested, simply massage 1 drop of Peppermint oil or Doterra Breathe/Air on and around your nose for immediate relief.

Never place oils straight into your nasal cavities!

Repeat every few hours as needed.

ESSENTIAL OIL MASSAGE FOR CONGESTION HEADACHES

If you are experiencing a headache as a result of a congested nose, apply 1 drop of peppermint oil on your temples. This topical application provides immediate relief from sinus pressure, and a cooling sensation to soothe your headache.

Wash your hands immediately after applying the oil, in order to avoid rubbing your eyes. Don’t touch your eyes after using peppermint oil as it is very irritant!

ESSENTIAL OILS VAPOR RUB

If you are looking for a healthier and chemical free alternative to store bought vapor rubs, I have the perfect recipe for you.

This recipe can provide an effective treatment to relieve chest congestion.

Most importantly, this DIY chest rub is very simple and only requires a couple of ingredients.

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup of shea butter or cocoa butter;
  • 1/2 cup of pure and unrefined coconut oil;
  • 10 drops each of Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Lavender and Peppermint essential oil.

Instructions:

In a small pot over the stove, gently melt the coconut oil and the shea butter (or cocoa butter). Once the oils are melted completely, remove the pot from the heat and add the essential oils. Stir well to make sure all ingredients are blended.

Slowly pour the mixture in small jars and close them with an air tight lid.

Let the mixture cool down completely before using it.

When needed, simply massage a little on your chest and back.

Store the jars in a dark cupboard, away from direct sunlight and heat.

Discard after 6 months max.

IMPORTANT

This DIY rub works very effectively if applied at night, before going to bed.

However, the peppermint oil might interfere with a good night sleep.

If you prefer, you can make 2 different batches: simply double the amount of lavender essential oil, and omit the peppermint oil for the mixture you will use at night.

Make sure to label your jars correctly so you will know which ones to avoid in the evening.

ESSENTIAL OILS DIY INHALER

This is a very good recipe for a simple inhaler that you can carry with you everywhere you go.

You children can even bring one to school as they are very discreet to use.

For this recipe you will need to purchase an empty inhaler.

They are very inexpensive and widely available in every health store or online.

Simply add 15 drops in total of your preferred essential oils (choose from any of the ones I recommended), close the lid tightly, label the inhaler correctly, and you are ready to go.

When the aroma of the oils has faded, discard the inhaler.

DIFFUSE ESSENTIAL OILS

Using your essential oil diffuser at home or at work, is a very effective way to use these plant extracts whenever you want.

Everyone in the room will benefit from the aroma of the oils, so it’s a win win!

Make sure to use only oils that are safe around everyone in the environment.

If you have pets, pay attention to them as well. Dogs and cats in particular have a very strong sense of smell and can be affected negatively by the oils. That is why it is very important to leave a door open, so they can leave the room if they prefer.

MAKE UP A ROLLER BOTTLE

For a natural remedy on the go, simply grab a 10 ml roller bottle, add your essential oils of choice, and fill to the top with a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil.

Shake well to mix and before each use.

Apply on and around your nose, or on your chest and back.

Store in a cool place, away from direct sunlight and heat.

Discard after 6 months max.
