Well, ok: I know! With this post I’m totally stepping into the “man zone”!

Generally I write posts for like minded mamas, but today I wanted to share something for the hubbies and boyfriends in your life.

So, if you are lucky enough to have a bearded man in your life, this post is for you.

What stimulates beard growth naturally?

Some men are not too bothered by this “all natural” thing you might have going on, so this is you chance to show them that they can take care of their prized beard using natural ingredients. And the results will be amazing!

Read till the end to learn what natural ingredients men can use to look after their beard, whether it is to stimulate its growth, or simply to get it soft and smelling gorgeous.

IMPORTANT

Only use 100% unadulterated and pure essential oils, from a reputable company.

Never use essential oils topically unless properly diluted, and only use them after a patch test.

Pay particular attention if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or on older people and young children.

Some people might develop skin irritations or adverse reactions.

Never ingest essential oils without reading the label first, as not all oils can be consumed internally.

Always talk to your trusted medical practitioner and/or certified aromatherapist before using essential oils, especially if you suffer from any allergy, intolerance, are ill or are already taking any medication.

what is a beard oil?

Beard oils are very popular products among men.

They have different properties, depending on the ingredients used. Some of them will stimulate beard growth, while others only soften the hair and give it a nice shine and smell.

They are widely available in any pharmacy, supermarket or health store.

However, commercial beard oils can be pricey and loaded with hidden ingredients.

On the other hand, making your own beard oil using only natural essential oils and your favorite carrier oil is very easy and it will cost you a fraction of the price!

What is the main ingredient in beard oil?

Essential oils are among the main ingredients found in beard oils.

There are many oils that can help with beard “maintenance”, and this post will show you exactly how to choose the right oil or blend for you, and how to use them to get the best and fastest results.

Does beard growth essential oil work?

Yes, essential oils are proven to work when it comes to stimulate hair growth. That means that you can confidently use them if you are trying to fix a patchy beard or simply to grow it faster.

However, you need to remember that the look and thickness of your beard is also linked to your health and to your genetics. Some guys have thicker beards, while others have sparse hair on their face.

Moreover, if you want to see results, you will need to be consistent with your applications. Essential oils are natural plant extract, and therefore might take longer to give you the results you are looking for. Be patient!

Which oil is best for beard?

As mentioned above, there are several oils that can be used in a beard oil.

The choice will very much depend on factors such as what goal you want to achieve, and what type of skin you have.

This is precisely why I’ve created this post: to help you choose the best essential oils for beard growth, and for your beard in general.

HOW DO YOU USE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR YOUR BEARD?

Essential oils are very powerful plant extracts. They have enormous beauty and health benefits, but should be used with caution, due to their high concentration.

When applied topically on your skin, they need to be properly diluted with a carrier oil.

what is a carrier oil?

A carrier oil is a plant extract that generally speaking is not as powerful as an essential oil. Therefore it can be used safely to “carry the essential oil into your skin”, without causing skin irritations.

Indeed, using essential oils neat (which means without being diluted), can cause skin problems, and you should avoid using oils without diluting them first.

WHAT ARE THE BEST ESSENTIAL OILS FOR BEARD GROWTH?

Here is a list of the best essential oils you could choose from to look after your beard.

Bear in mind that list is not exhaustive.

EUCALYPTUS ESSENTIAL OIL

Eucalyptus oil is antibacterial and anti fungal. Therefore, this oil is an excellent choice to keep your beard healthy and clean.

Furthermore, eucalyptus stimulates hair growth, and helps reducing itchiness.

Some people, however, might find its scent too strong, so keep that in mind before using it.

tea tree essential oil (melaleuca)

Another oil that is widely known for its antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties.

Tea tree oil is very effective at preventing and treating acne and other common skin conditions, making it an ideal oil to reduce itchiness.

Melaleuca is also excellent in fighting beard dandruff (or “beardruff” I should say!).

It can strengthen hair follicles and therefore promote beard growth.

BERGAMOT ESSENTIAL OIL

Loved by many for its citrusy fragrance, bergamot oil can be used in your beard balm for its smell and for its antibacterial properties.

If choosing this oil (or indeed any other citrus oil), make sure to only apply it on your beard hair, and not on your skin. In fact, citrus oils are photosensitive and you should not expose your skin to direct sunlight for at least 12 hours after application.

ROSEMARY ESSENTIAL OIL

One of my absolute favourite oil!

If you’d rather watch a video, you can watch on my Youtube channel!

Don’t forget to pin the post for later!

I wrote an extensive post on the many benefits of rosemary oil for skin and hair, and I also have a video on my YouTube channel.

Indeed rosemary is well known for its many benefits, and especially when it comes to hair growth. It stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles and the skin, therefore promoting hair growth and thickness.

In addition to that, you can use rosemary oil to support brain function and memory,  and to fight brain fog. Therefore, if you apply it on your beard, you will be smelling it all day long and as a consequence, you will give your brain a daily boost!

LEMONGRASS ESSENTIAL OIL

Just like rosemary, lemongrass can promote hair growth as a consequence of stimulating the hair follicles.

Furthermore, lemongrass contains high levels of antioxidants and can give a nice shine to your beard.

PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL

One of the most popular essential oils, thanks to its refreshing and reinvigorating scent.

Peppermint stimulates hair growth and has anti-inflammatory properties that will keep your skin and beard clean and soft.

Just like rosemary, peppermint oil has many benefits related to brain health. In addition to that, it is a great choice when it comes to fight migraines and headaches.

thyme essential oil

Thyme will nourish your skin and the hair follicles, supporting a healthy and fast beard hair growth.

LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL

Just like bergamot, lemon oil belongs to the citrus fruits family and should be used following the same safety guidelines in regards to sun exposure.

Well known for its antibacterial and cleaning properties, lemon oil can keep your beard shiny and healthy.

CEDARWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL

In my modest opinion, cedarwood oil is very largely overlooked. Indeed, not many people are familiar with its many properties.

This great oil is excellent at promoting a sense of calmness and relaxation. It can help fight dandruff and beard itch. If applied on your beard, it will leave it soft and shiny.

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

Lavender oil not only has a wonderfully calming aroma, but its benefit for the skin are excellent!

This oil is soothing for the skin, relieving redness and itchiness. At the same time, it can help moisturise a dry scalp and prevent “beardruff”.

YLANG YLANG ESSENTIAL OIL

Another oil that comes with a super scent that you will be able to smell throughout the day if you add it to your homemade beard oil.

Ylang Ylang stimulates hair growth and can help with balancing the oil production of oily skin, therefore minimising acne and breakouts.

copaiba essential oil

Copaiba is largely used to fight inflammation and to promote skin healing.

It is excellent against ageing skin, acne, dry skin, eczema, and psoriasis. Also, copaiba supports collagen production.

How do I choose the right beard oil?

Before choosing an oil, you will need to know exactly what your goal is.

For example, you might want to speed up growth, or simply fix a few patches. On the other hand, some guys simply want to have a shiny and healthy beard. Lastly, some people might just look for an oil that smells nice.

Whatever your reason for choosing essential oils, keep that in mind when going through the above list.

How do you make your own DIY beard oil?

Now that I’ve provided you with a list of essential oils recommended for beard growth and beard care in general, it’s time to see how you can make your own beard oil.

essential oil beard oil recipe

This is a very simple recipe that you can put together in a few minutes.

When you are choosing your carrier oil, you can use anyone you like, depending on your preference, your skin type, and what is available to you.

For example, among the best carrier oils, you could use:

  • Fractionated coconut oil,
  • Argan oil,
  • Jojoba oil,
  • Sweet almond oil,
  • Grapeseed oil,
  • Avocado oil,
  • Castor oil,
  • Etc.

you will need:

  • 30ml glass bottle with dropper cap;
  • Carrier oil of choice;
  • 20 drops of essential oils (in total);
  • 2 drops of Vitamin E oil.

Instructions

Firstly, add all the essential oils and Vitamin E oil drops to the bottle.

Top up with your favourite carrier oil.

Replace the lid tightly and shake well to mix all the ingredients.

Store in a drawer or cupboard, away from direct heat and sunlight.

Discard after 6 months max.

To use

Place a couple of drops of beard oil on the palm of your hand and start rubbing it all over your beard.

After covering all your beard, gently start massaging the skin underneath.

Follow up with your regular beard comb.

For best results, apply this homemade beard oil daily.

Bear in mind that longer beards will require more oil.

However, essential oils are very powerful, so a little goes a long way. If you have a very long beard, just add a drop more at the time when massaging it.

THE BEST ESSENTIAL OILS FOR BEARD: FAQs

Here are some of the most common questions in relation to the use of essential oils for beard care.

Which oil is best for faster beard growth? How can I speed up beard growth?

Essential oils are natural extracts and therefore they do not work in the same way as predictable, synthetic, man-made products.

In other words, different people react differently to different oils, and what works for one individual, might not work for another.

However, some oils are known to stimulate hair follicles and speed up beard growth. These oils are, for example, peppermint, rosemary and thyme.

What essential oils inhibit hair growth? What stops facial hair growth?

If for any reason you are trying to inhibit hair growth, you should not use essential oils for this specific purpose. Unfortunately essential oils cannot stop hair growth.

Please do talk to a trusted medical professional to receive the needed advice.

How long does it take for peppermint oil to grow beard? Does peppermint oil help grow beard?

Just like I explained above, essential oils work differently on different people. Therefore it is impossible to predict exactly how fast they will produce the results you are looking for.

The only advice I can give you, is to be consistent and patient. Use your chosen oils daily and the results will come.

This advice applies to peppermint oil, as well as rosemary or tea tree oil. They are well known to speed up growth, but results will vary from person to person.

Generally speaking, you will need topical application for at least a month before seeing results.

Does vitamin E increase facial hair?

Vitamin E oil is an excellent addition to all DIY beauty products. Indeed this oil is very good for repairing skin damage, such as scars and stretch marks and the likes. Vitamin E oil can promote a faster cell turnover and can moisturise your skin and reduce itchiness. To answer the question: yes, vitamin E oil is a great ingredient to add to your homemade beard oil.

How often should I oil my beard? Should I oil my beard everyday?

According to this article, “The frequency with which you apply beard oil depends on several factors including the length of your beard and where you live. Most men should apply beard oil twice a day, once in the morning before starting your day and once at night before bed.

Pro Tip: Take a nice warm shower before bed and apply a bit more oil to your face and beard than you normally would in the morning. Let the beard oil work its magic overnight. You’ll wake up to a softer beard and glowing skin in the morning.”

What happens if you use too much beard oil? Can you oil your beard too much?

Aside from possible side effects deriving from the use of essential oils, you really cannot use too much beard oil.

However, if you really overdo, you could clog your pores and develop skin irritation, acne and itchiness.

Just like with any other product, follow your common sense and only apply small amounts of your homemade essential oil beard oil. You can always add later if needed.

What are the side effects of beard growth oil?

Essential oils, although natural, do come with very minimal side effects.

This is why you should always do a patch test before using any product on your skin.

In particular, you should pay extra care if you:

  • Suffer from any condition or disease;
  • Are taking any medication;
  • Have very sensitive skin;
  • Suffer from any type of allergy;
  • Are older;
  • etc.

My advice is to always talk to a doctor or certified aromatherapist before using any essential oil!

If you develop any symptom,

(such as itchiness, a sore skin, eczema, a rush, etc.), or if you feel in any way unwell, immediately stop using essential oils and seek medical advice.

Does beard oil work right away? How do you know if beard oil is working?

I suppose you can safely say that you will know the beard oil is working if you start seeing results.

An essential oil beard oil will not work the same way as a commercially produced one, and it will take a little longer to see results. However, you might notice a fast improvement on your skin if you have any condition such as eczema or acne.

Remember that persistence and patience are key factors!

Is almond oil good for beard growth?

Almond oil (or sweet almond oil) is very good when it comes to skin care and hair care. This carrier oil is indeed very gentle and soothing on the skin.

Furthermore, almond oil is rich in magnesium, calcium and zinc, all minerals that are well known to help with hair growth and reduce hair loss.

Is aRGAN oil good for beard growth?

Argan oil is another excellent choice as a carrier oil for a beard oil.

Although it is non greasy, organ oil is rich in fatty acids and vitamin E, making it ideal for skin care and hair care.

Is JOJOBA oil good for beard growth?

My absolute favourite carrier oil!

Jojoba oil is a super oil cause its low in the comedogenic scale and it’s practically suitable for all skin type.

Indeed, if you are not sure what type of skin you have, choose jojoba oil to be safe!

This oil helps balancing the oil production of your skin, and will help prevent acne.

In addition to that, jojoba oil also helps with strengthening new hair growth.

can I apply castor oil on beard?

Castor oil is a carrier oil commonly recommended for any DIY hair product.

Although not my favourite due to its consistency and “greasiness”, castor oil is indeed an excellent choice for hair growth. High in vitamin E and fatty acids, it supports growth and strength of the hair, as well as having antibacterial properties.

Does coconut oil help grow beard?

According to this article, “Due to the presence of lauric acid, coconut oil encourages beard growth both in length and thickness. Moreover, as it nourishes the skin due to vitamin K and vitamin E, your beard becomes softer and tends to grow. This is because skin health and hair growth are correlated.

The two hormones responsible for beard growth are testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. As per a study, coconut oil prevents oxidative stress and increases testosterone levels.”

Is olive oil good for beard growth?

Olive oil can make your beard hair look thicker and shinier for sure. However, it is a very heavy oil and its smell is quite strong.

Because of its consistency and aroma, I would not recommend using it as the main ingredient in a homemade beard oil. Even the nicest smelling essential oil could hardly camouflage the scent of olive oil! Better choose a lighter and less scented carrier oil.

Another factor to keep in mind is price. Organic and virgin olive oil is very expensive, so it is probably not the first choice for many.

WHAT ARE THE BEST ESSENTIAL OIL FOR BEARD GROWTH? CONCLUSIONS

Beard oils are very popular products among guys and there’s no reason why you should not be able to make your own at the fraction of the price, and with excellent results.
