Back to School time! 

Here in Ireland children are starting to go back to school this week, so it’s time for some serious planning and stocking up on Essentials.

And when I say Essentials, I don’t only mean lunch boxes fillers. I mean Vitamins, Supplements, Omega 3, Probiotics and Essential Oils (see also my blog post here).

BACK TO SCHOOL ANXIETY

I bet every parent is worried about what this school year will bring, with everything going on at the moment.

It’s only natural to be worried, but we should not feel helpless.

There are steps we can easily take to support our families in these hard times.

Simple habits like making sure to supplement our diet every day. Or clean our homes with non toxic products. Or diffuse On Guard (Doterra’s protective blend) throughout the day.

If you have chosen a natural path for you and your family, and want to learn what to do and what resources are available to keep everyone healthy and happy, please read on and I’ll show you what we do in our home to support our immune system and to ensure a safe return to school.


PREPARE AND BE INTENTIONAL FOR BACK TO SCHOOL

Generally, I start planning and getting organised for back to school during the first week of August. After many weeks of late nights, lazy morning and barbecues and ice creams, it’s time to get our sleep patterns and diets in check and I make sure to slowly introduce a good routine for the children, so by the time school starts it is well established and there are less problems to deal with. 

SLEEP ROUTINE

Sleep of course it’s extremely important for everybody, regardless of age, but it is even more relevant for school going children and teenagers. Lack of good quality rest at night has a detrimental effect on our brain function and general health, and can lead to serious issues such as  weight gain, diabetes, fatigue, and depression (see medical article on the NHS website HERE for a better understanding of complications linked to lack of sleep).

I support my family using Oils like Serenity, Lavender, Balance, Wild orange, Vetiver, Frankincense, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Peace, Calmer (kids line), Copaiba, Roman Chamomile.

You can diffuse any combination of these Oils and blends at bed time and throughout the night, and/or make up a roller bottle (make sure to follow age appropriate safe dilution with a carrier oil), and apply under feet and along the spine.

GOOD DIET

Just like adults, children need to supplement their diet with good, highly bioavailable products. Diet alone, even a very good one, unfortunately cannot provide all vital nutrients we need on a daily basis. 

Growing bodies and brains need a little extra help to cope with a demanding daily routine, between school and homework and extra activities.

STAYING WELL HYDRATED

Drinking enough water every single day it’s extremely important. Our bodies need water to perform basic functions, and dehydration can lead to severe problems.

According to an article by the Mayo Clinic (read the full article HERE) dehydration can cause swelling of the brain (edema), kidney failure and seizures, among other problems. Not pleasant, right?

An average adult’s daily intake should be half their body weight in ounces. So, for example, if you weigh 100 pounds, you should ideally drink 50 ounces of water a day. Of course if you have a very active lifestyle, and therefore sweat a lot, you should up that intake.

I admit, I need to be reminded to drink regularly throughout the day. I just don’t feel thirsty so I forget to drink! And I also don’t really like the taste of plain water…. Since I discovered Doterra’s Essential Oils, I have become good at drinking water cause I add a drop or two of Essential Oils to a stainless steel bottle and I carry it with me wherever I go.

Doterra is the only company CPTG certified, meaning they are the only Company that sells Essential Oils that are safe for internal use. I would never ingest EO purchased from a local health store or another EO brand. And you shouldn’t either!

Good Oils and blends to add to water are Lemon, Grapefruit, Lime, Fennel, Wild Orange, Frankincense, Peppermint, Green Mandarin, Spearmint…. And many more.

The choice is yours and only depends on your taste.

OUR BACK TO SCHOOL DAILY ROUTINE (FOR THE CHILDREN)

MORNING

I generally wake up well before the children, to get breakfast started for them, and I turn on the diffuser in the kitchen (that I have filled the night before, to save time in the morning) with Oils like Lemon, Peppermint, Spearmint, Rosemary, Frankincense, Citrus Bliss, Cheer. Diffusing while the kids are having breakfast, helps them to wake up and start the day with a clear mind and purpose.

The children take their Doterra Food Supplements and Probiotics with breakfast. 

Before they are off to school, I apply a diluted blend of Tea Tree (Melaleuca), Rosemary and Lavender at the base of their skull, to help them fight head lice infestations.

Hand hygiene is of course very important, so I make sure my children carry a bottle of On Guard hand sanitising mist in their school bag.

They also have an inhaler in their bags, with a focus blend in it, in case they need a little help during the hours in school (see above for ideas on what Oils to choose for focus). They like to use Peppermint, Lemon and Frankincense or Thinker from the Doterra’s kids line.

If the children feel a bit congested or under the weather, I also give them a second inhaler with Oils like Air/Breathe and Peppermint in it, to use as needed during the morning.

AFTERNOON

When the children arrive home in the afternoon I make sure to have On Guard diffusing in the kitchen, and any Oil or blend to support focus and concentration in their bedrooms, to help them with homework.

At dinner time, they take the On Guard beadlets to support their immune system. Each tiny beadlet contains the equivalent of 1/4 of a drop of On Guard, so I give them one or two, depending on their age.

EVENING

At bed time, I have the diffuser in they bedrooms filled with any Oil or blend that can help promoting a restful night (see our “sleep routine” for ideas on what Oils to choose). Diffusing throughout the night ensures a good night sleep, and therefore happy and rested children in the morning. 

I also have a roller bottle for my youngest child, to support his immune system, with a F.L.O.O.M. blend (Frankincense, Lemon, Oregano, On guard and Melalueca), that I apply along his spine and/or under his feet when he goes to bed.


This is the routine we follow on a typical day, but sometimes we might use more Doterra products, or less, depending on circumstances.


This year, I will also use other blends if I feel my children are a bit anxious about going back to school after many months. 

It’s very natural for kids to have mixed feelings about starting school, especially this year: they miss their friends and definitively crave going back to a solid routine, but at the same time they might be worried about it all.
