If you know me personally, or if you have been following me for a while, you might now that I’m vegetarian, and my husband and eldest daughter are too.

But I wasn’t always a vegetarian.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with healthy eating but, having been raised on beef and chicken, moving to a different diet has not been an easy task.

I didn’t know where to start, and I admit that laziness and the idea of staying on the path I already knew, got the best of me. So I never made the decision to change.

Then one evening a few years back, I went to see a live show from these 2 very famous Irish chefs: “The Happy Pear”, twin brothers from Co. Wicklow (Ireland) turned chefs after setting up their first Fruit and Veg shop in the town of Greystones in 2004.

It was a lovely evening with my girlfriends, and we were offered gorgeous food to sample.

And that show did it for me!

Those 2 guys said something that made me think that I could do it, I just needed to do a bit of research on how to maintain a healthy, balanced diet while getting rid of meat and fish.

And so my journey started.

It’s been a few years now and I never looked back since.

Of course I’m not saying that it was easy. I was afraid to tell people, in case they tried to talk me out of it (“Ehy: if it ain’t broken, don’t try and fix it, right?”).

My husband, a very big meat eater, at first said to me that he was never going to transition to a vegetarian diet, so I shouldn’t even bother asking. Which was perfectly fine by me of course, as I wanted to change for me and me alone at the very start.

On the night of the show I had purchased “The Happy Pear” first book, “The Happy Pear: Healthy, Easy, Delicious Food to Change Your Life” (the only one they had published to date), and I started cooking some of their recipes.

It wasn’t easy.

Every evening I would cook a meal only for myself, one meal for my husband and 2 daughters, and one meal for my youngest, who was only a toddler back then….It was hard, but I stuck with it and, looking back now, man it was worth it!

Slowly my husband started noticing how delicious and “different” and inviting my food looked, and one evening he asked me if I could cook the same for him the following night. And I did.

And the night after that. And the following one.

In less than 3 months since I had started my personal journey towards a healthier diet, my husband, the big BBQ burgers and ribs eater, decided to become a vegetarian.

And a few years after that, my eldest daughter (who, by the way, had, like most children, always hated any form of vegetables), asked me to help her start too.

And here we are now, 3 out of 5 people of my family are vegetarian, and hopefully the other 2 will follow when they are older.

And this all happened because on that evening a long time ago I went to see a show in a local theatre!

These 2 guys are amazing and they are celebrities here in Ireland of course. They are successful writers and they own a few shops and cafes.

Just last Friday they published their 4th book, “The Happy Pear: Vegan Cooking for Everyone: Over 200 Delicious Recipes that Anyone can make”, and I’ve already ordered it and am just waiting for the delivery.

I own ALL of their books and let me tell you, if you think that they are just “another cooking book that you might only use once”, think again.

Their books are a great source of information for anybody interested in knowing more about moving to a vegetarian/plant-based diet, and they are packed with recipes that will keep you going for a very long time.

They have tips and advice on how to start fermenting and even make sourdough bread (and everyone is literally giving sourdough bread a try right now).

They have recipes to cover every meal and every budget, and dishes that suit all family.

I really hope I tickled your interest and you will give these books a try.
