Now that summer is in full swing and we are wearing lighter and shorter clothes, it’s very important to look after our skin.

After the long winter months, it’s time to give our body a good scrub in order to get rid of dead cells and flaky skin, and to bring out its natural glow to improve overall skin tone.

Body scrubs are among my favourite skin care products. In fact, I’ve been using natural sugar body scrubs for a few years now, and I figured it was time to share with you all!

It’s so easy to make your own organic exfoliating body scrub from scratch!

Most importantly, sugar body scrubs:

  • will leave you with soft and smooth skin;
  • can be used on your entire body, to give you radiant skin;
  • are helpful in getting rid of dark spots;
  • can help to improve blood circulation and therefore to diminish the appearance of cellulite and annoying bumps.

WHAT IS SUGAR BODY SCRUB USED FOR?

Sugar body scrubs are an ideal tool when it comes to natural beauty and personal care.

By using a sugar body scrub on a regular basis, you will give your body a natural glow and a silky, smooth appearance.

Sugar body scrubs are great for exfoliating your skin, as they remove dead skin cells, lift away impurities and excess oil, and also stimulate circulation.

In addition to that, when you follow up with a good natural moisturiser, your skin will absorb it more easily. For this reason, you will get the most benefits out of scrubbing.

WHY YOU SHOULD MAKE YOUR OWN BODY SCRUB AT HOME.

Homemade body scrubs are in my opinion the best option.

Firstly, compared to the store bought alternatives, you can make your own sugar body scrub to suit your needs and preferences, in terms of scents, flavours and consistency. Thus, you are not limited by the choices offered by some companies.

Secondly, provided that you use high quality, organic and 100% natural ingredients,  they are non-toxic, eco friendly and edible!

Lastly, they also make great gifts that your loved ones will appreciate.

WHAT INGREDIENTS AND TOOLS DO YOU NEED TO MAKE A NATURAL BODY SCRUB?

You will find that only a few ingredients are needed in order to make a DIY natural body scrub. In fact, you most likely have them in your pantry!

Generally speaking, a body scrub will need:

  • sugar / salt;
  • carrier oil (for example, virgin coconut oil or avocado oil);
  • Vitamin E oil (optional but recommended);
  • Essential Oils (optional but recommended).

The tools you will need are simply some clean, glass jars with a sealable lid, and some spoons. Make sure to thoroughly clean and dry the tools required before using them.

WHICH SUGAR IS BEST FOR BODY SCRUB? CAN YOU USE REGULAR SUGAR FOR BODY SCRUB?

In order to answer this question, I had a look at what the “Simple Veganista” wrote on her blog.

From her website:

TYPES OF SUGAR TO USE FOR SUGAR BODY SCRUBS

“There are three main types of sugar you can choose from when making homemade sugar scrubs. Personally, I tend to stick with pure cane sugar, with brown sugar coming in second. Pure cane sugar is just right for my skin type, but I encourage you to try the different types to see what works best for your skin type.

  • Brown sugar is the least abrasive making it a good choice for sensitive skin and facial scrubs. Since it is the gentlest, a brown sugar scrub can be used up to 4 times a week.
  • Pure cane sugar (unrefined white) is good for all skin types and contains essential nutrients to feed the skin. It can be used 2 – 3 times per week.
  • Turbinado sugar (raw) is naturally the coarsest due to its large granules and makes for a great body scrub. It is the least processed of the three sugars and holds the most essential minerals. Body scrubs made with raw sugar can be used up to 2 times a week.”.

ARE SUGAR SCRUBS GOOD FOR YOU SKIN? THE BENEFITS OF A SUGAR BODY SCRUB

Using a natural sugar body scrub has many benefits.

Let’s list some of them:

  • sugar scrubs exfoliate your skin, by removing the outer layer of dead cells and therefore helping the new, healthier cells to come to surface;
  • as a consequence, your dull skin will look brighter and feel smoother;
  • if you are a fanatic of the tan (fake or real), exfoliating will help with giving it a smoother and even appearance;
  • sugar scrubs can moisturise your skin and provide essential nutrients and fatty acids (depending on the carrier oil you choose);
  • they help in fighting ingrown hair: if you use a scrub right before shaving, you can unclog pores and remove a build up of dead cells that may lead to ingrown hairs;
  • exfoliating will help in removing toxins that naturally accumulate in our body through pollution, chemicals contained in body care products, etc.
  • dead cells and toxins build up contribute to premature ageing of the skin. Consequently, scrubbing will  give your skin that youthful look and feel we all crave.
  • body scrubs moisturise dry skin and help improve the appearance of dry patches. Some people might think that body scrubs are not recommended if you have a dry skin. That is incorrect, as the oils used in a homemade scrub will help moisturise your skin.

IS SUGAR OR SALT BETTER FOR YOUR SKIN?

When making your own natural body scrub, you can choose to use sugar or salt.

In order to understand which one to utilise to best suit your needs, let’s have a look at what are the main differences between the two ingredients.

SUGAR Vs SALT SCRUBS

Here are a few things to consider before choosing to use sugar instead of salt in your homemade natural body scrub.

SUGAR SCRUBS

Regular granulated sugar has rounder granules compared to salt, making it less abrasive. Therefore, sugar scrubs are best for the face and sensitive skin in general.

Granulated sugar also dissolves quickly in water, making it an ideal ingredient to add to a natural face cleanser in order to create a mild face scrub.

Unrefined cane sugar contains calcium, magnesium, iron and potassium, making it an ideal ingredient to nourish your skin.

Also, when choosing whether to use sugar or salt in your homemade natural scrub, keep in mind that if you have an abrasion or cut on your skin, or if you have an irritated skin, salt will sting, so better stay away from it.

SALT SCRUBS

When using salt in your DIY body scrubs, always opt for dead sea salt or Himalayan pink salt, as common table salt has gone through a refining process that strips it of its natural and beneficial properties.

Salt granules are bigger and sharper than the sugar ones, making it ideal to use on dry areas of your skin, such as feet, legs and elbows.

If using salt, I would not recommend applying it on your face. In that instance, opt for sugar instead.

Salt has also an amazing power in drawing out toxins from your body, and can work as an anti inflammatory compound for sore muscles.

Because salt is very powerful, I wouldn’t recommend using it in a scrub more than once a week.

WHAT CARRIER OILS ARE GOOD FOR BODY SCRUB? TYPES OF CARRIER OILS TO USE FOR SUGAR SCRUBS.

When creating your own body scrub, choosing the proper carrier oil is very important.

There are many carrier oils on the market, and you can choose one over another based on your preferences.

Things you might need to consider are:

  • price
  • availability to you
  • consistency
  • smell/colour
  • absorbability
  • properties and benefits for the skin

You might want to use avocado oil, coconut oil (both the unrefined and the fractionated version), apricot oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, etc.

I personally only use Fractionated Coconut oil when it comes to my body and Jojoba oil for my face.

In my opinion they work very well as they are easily absorbed, have no strong smell or greasy consistency and leave no residue on my clothes.

Choosing the right carrier oil is totally a personal choice. For this reason I have put a post together for you with an extensive list of the different types of carrier oils and their benefits.

For your convenience, you can download the FREE PRINTABLE version.

DO I NEED TO ADD A PRESERVATIVE?

When making your natural body scrub you don’t need to add any preservative.

Both sugar and salt act as preservatives already. Moreover, there is no water among the ingredients, so the final product will keep for longer.

WHAT ESSENTIAL OILS ARE BEST FOR SUGAR SCRUB?

Essential Oils are an optional ingredient in my recipes, but I highly recommend you use them.

Not only they will provide you with a pleasant aroma, but they have incredible benefits for your skin and your overall health.

If you have been been following me for a while, you know that I exclusively use Doterra Essential Oils in my home.

HOW MUCH ESSENTIAL OIL DO I PUT IN A BODY SCRUB?

Safety should always be your number one priority when making any DIY product.

Remember that Essential Oils are very powerful, so only use a couple of drops, as little goes a long way!

HOW TO USE?

I like to use my body scrub right before I shower. For me, it is the easiest and fastest way. Most importantly, it’s mess free (to avoid it going everywhere on the bedroom floor)!

I slightly wet my skin first with warm water. This helps to soften the skin a little, and makes it for an easier application of the scrub.

Then, I gently scrub my skin in circular motion. I do this for a few minutes.

After exfoliating, I shower as per normal, using my homemade body wash.

Lastly, I follow up with my natural homemade body butter (made with organic cocoa butter and organic shea butter) or aloe vera gel (I find this works best in the summer months, as it is very light).

HOW TO STORE?

If you like me like your scrub to be a shower staple, I suggest you keep the jar, tightly closed and upright, in your shower or bath tub.

This way it’s always ready and handy when you need it!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN BODY SCRUB AT HOME? MY BEST RECIPES

Making a natural sugar body scrub is as easy as gathering the ingredients needed, and mixing them all together.

Here I’m giving you my best recipes.

Keep in mind that sometimes, depending on the quality and brand of ingredients you use, you might need to add more or less sugar and/or carrier oil.

To get the recipe right, aim at a sandy consistency. If the mix is too “soupy” or runny, the sugar will dissolve too fast. Hence you won’t be able to use the scrub. If that happens, simply add more sugar.
